Fantasy Parasols Pretty as a Picture
Parasols were not my first art form. I have been making digital photo art with a strong gothic slant since 2003. My photographs can be seen online at www.WoodenNickelImages.com. I had been using a lot of costumes and swords as props for my models, and when I saw a maroon stick umbrella, I thought it could be decorated to make a more interesting photo piece. I took some fabric lace and ribbon lace from my sewing supplies and began to change the umbrella into a parasol. I had my photographs in an art fair and as I welcomed patrons to my tent I was busy sewing the parasol. To my surprise, many people were intrigued by my prop, perhaps even more so than my photography. That is when I realized that perhaps others would want a parasol.
Now I create parasols for other creative people, photographers, burlesque dancers, costume enthusiasts, and those who enjoy attention.
I start with a standard stick umbrella, and choose fancy fabrics and matching trims. I hand stitch the fabric and trim around the edges of the umbrella canopy and glue it down with a waterproof glue. Seeing as I leave the original rain canopy in place, it blocks more light and even light rain. Making my parasol functional as well as beautiful.
I would say two things inspire me. The people that I imagine would want to own and use my parasols, and the fabrics I work with. I am lucky enough to be able to work with the most beautiful, and fancy fabric in the fabric store. Laces, sheers, holiday, special occasion, anything that sparkles... It doesn't matter how frivolous or gaudy the material, I love it! After all, no one wants a drab parasol. Parasols are for royalty and fine cultured ladies standing out in a crowd is a must! This brings me to the people that inspire me. One must have a special attitude and presence to use a parasol, after all, they will be the center of attention when they go walking with a parasol. I think of fabulous red hat society ladies celebrating their golden years as I construct purple and red parasols, I channel brides as I sew white lace and pearls, my imagination dances as I add sequins and feathers onto a parasol for a burlesque performer, every combination of fabric brings to mind the rightful owner of each unique parasol.
