About

Late Blooming Painter tries to recapture lost time

I spent 27 years in the business of selling and appraising Real Estate in Florida - but desperately missed the beauty of nature I had left behind growing up in the Northeast U.S. I missed the change of the seasons more than I realized, and eventually, after retirement, I was fortunate enough to be able to move to the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. This move and prior short visits rekindled my love of the outdoors and the woods and mountain settings. So I began to try to capture all of this in my paintings.
I guess I really had a lot of art desire stored up, and soon my space for the paintings I had created outgrew the house we lived in. So I started selling first one, and then another painting until it became a business for me. It is often hard to part with one of my paintings, as I feel like each one of them is one of my children. When it leaves, I want to feel it found a good home. So selling my art on a place like Etsy, where I can have direct contact with the buyers felt much more natural to me than selling through a gallery.
I am primarily a self-taught artist. I studied briefly with Lynne Koerner and Elisabeth Ferber in Florida, and have supplemented this instruction with an extensive collection of books and video tapes from well known artists. I particularly admire the works of the Hudson River School of Painters in both their choice of subject matter and their treatment of light, and have studied the paintings of the Luminists and the Impressionists. My style can be characterized as a 'Realistic Impressionism' because of my bold use of color and my preference for 'suggesting' rather than 'detailing' features in my paintings

Born in the northeast United States, I grew up enjoying the great outdoors, and spent countless hours hiking, boating, swimming and enjoying area activities. I loved the variety of weather, and was as happy ice skating on a frozen pond as I was body surfing the waves at Long Island's Jones Beach. I loved going for long trail rides on horseback, or sailing a racing class boat on unpredictable Long Island Sound.
My love of the changing seasons ranged easily from enjoyment of the crisp days of October with their breathtaking display of autumn leaves, to the delight of waking up to an overnight snowfall which had transformed familiar objects into a virtual wonderland of unusual shapes and mounds. I love to hear the crunch of snow beneath my boots on a frigid January morning, but also enjoyed watching for the first returning Robin, examining the barren tree branches for signs of swelling buds, and searching the thawing grounds in March to see if the crocus and daffodils had poked their heads above the dwindling snow cover to announce the coming of Spring.

The theme of my artwork has always been - The World Around Us. I feel that although we are surrounded by natural beauty, our lives are often so busy and stressed out, we don't take the time to notice it.

Several of my collectors have told me that they like to hang my paintings in their homes and offices. Then, when life becomes unusually stressful, they look at one of my paintings, and it momentarily takes them out of their current situation to a more peaceful time, and they feel refreshed.

I lived in Florida for over 30 years, and even now I still marvel at the incredible beauty of its sunrises, sunsets and it's very colorful foliage and tropical flowers. Although many of my paintings reflect my experience with these colorful skies and foliage, I feel that my roots are still deep in the New England area, which explains my many paintings of the mountains, streams and woodland areas of the northeast, and from my current home in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain areas of North Carolina and Tennessee.

I have also traveled extensively to our National Parks in Colorado, California and the Southwest, and along the Atlantic coastline, always taking pictures of the countryside. My goal as an artist is to try to recapture the beauty of these places on canvas so I can share it with others.

COLLECTORS AND AWARDS:

My painting hang in private collections throughout the U.S. and Canada, and also in Spain, the U.K. France and Australia. I have found the internet to be a great way to expose my artwork to people who would otherwise be unable to see it. My paintings have also earned numerous awards in the Silver Arts Competitions in Western North Carolina.

EXHIBITIONS:

My paintings have been exhibited at the Gallery on Virginia, Ocoee City Hall, Downtown Orlando Library, Maitland Civic Center, Beardall Senior Center, Creative Spirit Gallery and Galaxy Aviation, all in the Greater Orlando area, and I also had a 2 month long solo exhibition at Apopka City Hall in Apopka, Florida. My paintings are locally exhibited at the Opportunity House in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
