Full time traveling doesn’t make space for binding. Here’s a fave found studio space: an old chicken coop, upstate NY.
Handbound Journals, Upcycled Books, and Oddities for the curious and earth conscious.
Hi! I’m a bookbinder who also lives full time on the road as a traveling musician with The Rough & Tumble. While a self learner, I’ve studied with bookbinders from around the world to hone my craft, and transform this meticulous art into a more accessible, earth conscious result.
While my studio space is at the whim of the road, I’ve bound books in most of the contiguous States, and as a result have collected materials unique from coast to coast. Some journals are hand built from the ground up using industry standard bookboard, cloth, paper, and materials. But most are utilizing discarded library books, thrift shop finds, and found and castaway materials— rather, upcycled. Most of my scraps are folded into another project, or used to keep me warm with a fire, recomposed as recycled handmade paper, or simply recycled. I work hard to ensure that my craft is clean so your conscience can be, too.
I’ve been an avid journal keeper since I was a kid, and a songwriter by profession. The delight and anticipation of a brand new blank journal is immeasurable to me. My joy in making these books comes not only from the craft itself, but from the knowing that the recipient may use it for their own stories or lists or drawings— that’s to say, for their own mental health. And with many of these books coming from a vintage history of their own, it’s a wonderful weave to see them join with someone else’s story to continue their own— in a new form.
Peanut Butter & Pickle Press is a fun, don’t-take-it-too-seriously shop that nods to those torn pages and worn edges life hands you. Each journal is not only handbound, it’s a celebration of the very full and surprising way we are bound to our history, our environment, and ourselves.
