Attempt to Transfer Data Into the Organic World V.22
Old Electronics Can Be Used to Make the Best Art... with Some Imagination.
The Printed Circuit Board is conceived and made for a single purpose no matter what device it was made for. After its usefulness and purpose has been fulfilled, the detail and beauty, still alive, on the PCB make the best skin for any sculpture. I felt that the true purpose for the PCB was to come out of its shell and become part of a sculpture, exposing its true beauty to the world.
I knew it was possible to make the kind of sculptures I envisioned out of PCBs, but I just didn’t know how to at first. They’re not made to bend, conform, or represent anything other than a predetermined set of commands by its original designer. After examining one PCB in particular, I felt it looked so organic with the amount of detail that was in it, I thought it belonged on a piece of art to be appreciated by all.
I soon found out that there were no tools, instructions or reference materials on how to make PCBs into sculptures that represent organic forms. I knew it was possible, however, I needed to discover exactly how on my own. So began my journey into making tools and testing different ways to make them come together to form the vision I had in my mind. I needed to make the most inorganic thing into something representing organic life.
After a year of trial and error, I was able to perfect the art of using PCBs to represent organic life in the form of insects, flowers and sea life. This came at a cost of many cuts and scrapes along the way. PCBs were resistant to being cut and shaped the way I wanted them to. Soon after mastering the tools and developing a technique on how to manipulate these abandoned computer organs, it was only a matter of finding the right PCB for the piece I was making. I have named this medium, PCB mixed Media. It has changed my view of the world in that; I see everything in straight lines now. Every form, organic or not, can have a PCB counterpart as long as you see them in a world of straight lines that exists only along the X, Y, & Z axis.
