About

Origami designed to lift the spirit

We are the Peace Crane people!

We make the original origami peace crane ornaments from Japanese Yuzen washi paper, strung with a golden thread, bead, and Swarovski crystal heart.

Daphne is our crane making artist and the originator of the peace crane ornaments, her Mom Carol helps with the business and with folding, stringing the beads and gold thread, and packaging, and David (Carol's pal and husband) helps with the tech stuff and just about anything (like making this store).

We start out with a large piece of paper, an artwork in itself, and then cut it into precise squares. Precision here is important as any slight discrepancy from squareness is magnified in the final origami model. Then we fold! The finished cranes are then pierced and threaded with golden thread that itself has been threaded with a golden bead and a crystal heart. The creation of these ornaments is a meditation and we send them out into the world with our hopes and prayers.

We have been making these beautiful cranes for 25 years, as Peace Craft Studios, and you can visit us there at www.peacecraft.cc where we have more photos and writings about the cranes and our history.

We create these beautiful cranes with the hope that they will uplift the spirit of whoever receives one. We use the finest materials and craftsmanship we can and we are certain that you will be delighted with your origami ornament.

Peace Craft (the parent studio of PeaceCranes) was founded in 1990, inspired by a benefit dinner where Hiroshima survivors shared their experiences and spoke out against any future use of atomic weapons. Later in the same year, we visited Japan where we fell in love with handmade paper and the art of origami.

The Peace Craft circle now includes Daphne as well other members of the family. Through the sale of our handmade ornaments, mobiles and cards we spread the story of the Peace Crane and contribute to organizations that relieve children's suffering. We hold our selves to the highest standards of quality and consistency. Peace Craft donates to organizations that work to relieve children's suffering. Previous recipients have been local hospices and meal programs, The Peace Abbey, Kobe Earthquake fund, NONA in Bosnia, Kosovo Refugee Aid, Amahoro in Rwanda, AIMS Hospital in India, the Mennonite Central Committee Afghan Refugee Program, and Women for Women International.

What do people do with these beautiful cranes? We see them a lot hanging from rearview mirrors in their cars, and they are stunning hanging from Christmas trees. They make wonderful holiday gifts for any holiday and in their flat packages you can pop them into a card and into the mail! But one of the most common and moving uses we know of is as a gift for someone who is ill or injured, and we see them hanging in hospital rooms where they catch the light and bring a bright splash of color. They are also very popular for weddings and celebrations of every kind, and many times they have been used in memorial services.
