For as long as I can remember I’ve made books or scribbled in those made by others. Stapled or stitched, I stuffed them with writing, drawing, and gathered bits. With our kits anyone, with a little practice, can learn the art of bookbinding!

We are husband and wife with a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We have 2 chickens and 1 cat. We live and work in Philadelphia, Penna.

We are Walter and Margaux Kent, husband and wife. We have a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We live and work in Philadelphia, Penna.

Our work is made from olde things. Treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, and useable, long lasting keepsakes. We used to make them for ourselves and now we make them for everyone.

Peg and Awl began without a plan, a fortunate pairing of two minds, different but in sync. Both Walter and I have a fervor for history, though we each unearth our passions in different ways. I, Margaux, love the romantic imaginings of what once was and the effects time and stories have on materials and objects. Though not military-minded, I am an invader; mostly of abandoned houses and the past. Walter, home schooled by his history-aficionado mother and apprentice to his carpenter father, was a soldier in the American Army. There he learned how to do things effectively and simply though his practical nature does not preclude his immense creativity. Walter’s pragmatism, my own dreamy tendencies, and our shared curiosity combine to create Peg and Awl. With our two boys as constant companions, we find inspiration in them as much as we do in the past, taking notes and creating new objects to delight younger beings – Peg and Awl is not just for big people.

After nearly bursting our house with the weight of materials, makers and ideas, in 2012 we finally decided to move the business elsewhere. Peg and Awl’s new home is in the Atlas Casket Factory, a building that still boasts a conveyor belt, a trolley track and traces of the making that occurred for decades. Here histories overlap as Peg and Awl gathers new life with new makers, new personalities, and new hands. Time clocks once again resound throughout building. Ghosts linger and invisible hands shake the visible. We are makers. In Philadelphia. Still.

Welcome to Peg and Awl!

On January 10th, 2019, we will be celebrating our our 10th anniversary! Walter and I started our company right here on Etsy just after he returned from Iraq, and our boy Søren was 1 1/2 years old. We began without a plan, just making things we wanted for ourselves out of waste materials from neighborhood homes that were being torn down.

A lot has happened in the past 10 years. We now have two boys (Søren 11 and Silas 9) and employ 11 people in our Philadelphia workshop. We purchased a shell and wreck of an olde building on an acre lot in Port Richmond, Philadelphia, and have transformed it into our new workshoppe and showroom. We also started improving the concrete exterior with employee gardens, native plants, and honeybees!

Thank you so much for joining us in this epic adventure!

GUARANTEE
We guarantee our products to be free of defects in the materials or craftsmanship. We will be happy to replace any defective products. Wear from normal usage is not included in this guarantee.

We believe firmly in creating enduring products whose lifespan can be lengthened by repair. Many of the materials in our products have already seen at least one lifetime of use, and have accumulated stories which are now proudly displayed in the character of our objects. Each further marking, crack, or dent accumulated throughout each object’s new life – and the patches applied thereto – are further stories to proudly display. To contact us about repairs, please message us with photographs and we will assess the repair needed.

A NOTE ON OUR OBJECTS
Much of our work is made from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes and useable, long-lasting treasures.

Our materials have character, and that’s what we enjoy about working and creating with them. Although we strive to describe and photograph each product as accurately as possible, the antique and salvaged materials often lend the unique marks of their past life to each object.

EXCHANGES
If you receive an object and it is not as you hoped, please let us know and we will do our best to make it right. Please message us with your order number within 10 days of receiving the package. We will send you an exchange/return authorization form that must be filled out and included in your package.

Items must be returned in the original condition they were received, along with any tags or packaging. Return shipping costs are the customer’s responsibility. International customers will also be responsible for any duties and taxes that may apply.

RETURNS
We will gladly accept returns on objects in new, unused condition with all tags and packaging intact. If you would like to return an object, message us with your order number within 10 days of receiving your order. We will send you an exchange/return authorization form that must be filled out and included in your package. You do not need to include the original receipt with your return. International customers will also be responsible for any duties and taxes that may apply.

You may return your item for store credit or a full refund of the amount which you paid at the time of purchase. The buyer is responsible for return shipping.

Products that are ineligible for return include:
- Custom products (custom-sized Tub Caddies, custom-tagged products, &c.)
- Customized products (products with custom engraving, monogrammed bags, &c.)
- Gift Cards
- Sale items (including Mystery Boxes)

Returned goods are your responsibility until they reach our warehouse – make sure they are packed properly and cannot get damaged on the way. All goods will be inspected on return.

Refunds will be credited back to your original method of payment, and will post approximately three days after the date of processing.

Only products purchased directly through Peg and Awl may be returned. Peg and Awl products purchased from another retailer must be returned to the original seller.

DAMAGED OBJECTS
If an object you receive is damaged, please message us with your order number within 48 hours and include a photograph of the damage. Please keep in mind that some marks may simply be indications of the past life of the antique materials we use (see the “A Note on Our Objects” section above). If you receive an object and it is not as you hoped, please let us know and we will do our best to make it right.

CUSTOM WORKS AND FINAL SALE
We offer custom engraving and monogramming on many of our products, as well as certain custom-sized products such as Tub Caddies. These and any other products that have been customized specifically for you are not returnable.

We may accommodate certain customization requests that are not offered on our shop. Frequently asked questions
What is Peg and Awl?

We are a husband and wife with a boy called Søren and a boy called Silas. We live and work in Philadelphia, Penna. Our work is made from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes and useable, long-lasting treasures. We used to make them for ourselves and now we make them for everyone.

Do you guarantee your products?

We guarantee our products to be free of defects in the materials or craftsmanship. We will be happy to replace any defective products. Wear from normal usage is not included in this guarantee. We believe firmly in creating enduring products whose lifespan can be lengthened by repair. Many of the materials in our products have already seen at least one lifetime of use, and have accumulated stories which are now proudly displayed in the blemishes on our objects. Each further crack, dent, &c. accumulated throughout each object’s new life – and the patches applied thereto – are further stories to proudly display. To contact us about repairs, please send us a message.

When will my order arrive? Can I expedite my order?

We do our best to maintain an inventory of each object. However, we hand-make all of our products in our Philadelphia workshoppe. If your product is not in stock when you order, it may take up to 10 days to ship – we have to make it! Orders shipped to the contiguous U.S. typically take 2 days to a week arrive. If you would like to expedite your order please send us a message before placing your order. Since our products are made by hand, we would need to verify that we have your item in stock in order to ensure it will arrive in time.

Can you make my bag a little bigger or smaller? Can you make be a custom bag?

Making size or style alterations to bags is a very complicated process and we do not offer this service.

What materials do you use?

FABRIC: We use 15 oz. waxed duck canvas (19 oz. with wax) for most of our bags. Waxed canvas originated in the sailing industry in Scotland in the 1920s and became widely used because of its waterproofing abilities and superb durability.

WOOD: Our wood products are made from wither reclaimed wood from old-growth trees, or new wood sourced from sustainable forests.

LEATHER: The bits of leather that cover our books are gathered willy-nilly from farms, flea markets and shoppes across the world. Leather straps and handles on our bags are WWII-era military-issue gun slings ranging from well-worn to deadstock.

METAL: We use only sterling silver and 14K gold. Our bronze is an alloy that we have matched closely to the color of gold.

Will this bag fit my computer / tablet / &c.?

The dimensions of all of our bags are listed at the bottom of each bag’s Etsy page.

Can I get a longer strap for my bag or more holes in the strap?

You can order a longer strap by searching in our Etsy shoppe and adding the Longer Leather Strap for Tote, Finch or Hunter item to your order. Link: www.etsy.com/listing/180196137

If you would like additional holes in your strap, please include the number and placement in your order notes.

How do I care for my Peg and Awl object?

BAGS: Waxed canvas like leather does not require full cleaning and should not be machine washed, machine dried, or dry cleaned. If necessary, spot clean your waxed canvas with cold water using a sponge or gentle brush. Store in a dry place to prevent mold and mildew. Waxed canvas will better with age, but will need to be re-waxed in time. We recommend using Martexin Wax.

KITCHEN OBJECTS: Our kitchen objects are finished with Bartram Wood Balm, a natural balm that restores and preserves wood. We recommend that kitchen objects be refinished with Bartram Wood Balm when they start to get dull and look worn. Hand wash kitchen objects in hot water to clean. Do not let stand in water. Bartram Wood Balm is available in our Etsy shoppe.

Do you offer personalization?

Bags can be ordered with a three letter leather monogram using the drop-down menu on each bag’s product page. Please include the letters you wish to have monogrammed in your cart/order notes.

Most of our wood products can be personalized with engraving by selecting one of our engraving options on the product’s Etsy page. Please read the product’s description and look at its images for more information on placement and character limits. Please include the text you wish to have engraved in your cart/order notes.

How do I find my ring size?

The best way to find your ring size is to go to a physical jewelry store and get measured. You can also search online for a ring sizing guide. We will resize rings for free once (buyer is responsible for return shipping to our workshoppe). Any additional re-sizings can be done for a small fee. Please contact us for resizing information.
