About

Tactile letterpress printing wins heart of digital graphic designer

Being able to express myself creatively manifested itself at an early age - when I was 3 or 4 years old, I covered my family's living room wall with a wax crayon mural when no one was paying attention. It was exquisite, so I didn't understand why the wall got repainted in a fresh coat of white.

I pressed on, looking for other surfaces to cover and decorate over the years. Not surprisingly, I ended up becoming a graphic designer, working for design studios and magazines, designing logos and branding materials, magazines, packaging ideas for variety of products, as well as window displays. Over the years, working primarily on the computer, I have been drawn to the tangible and dimensional: things that I can make with my hands.

Upon a friend's recommendation I signed up for an evening letterpress class at Cooper Union (taught by Dan Morris of The Arm Letterpress), as an outlet to 'get my hands dirty'. Long story short - something just clicked, it felt so right! I found what I was looking for! The letterpress printing process, despite being so old, feels very new in the age of all things digital. I find lots of enjoyment in mixing inks by hand, tinkering with the machine, adjusting the pressure, checking the rollers, and cranking the handle to get the paper to meed the ink. The convergence of graphic design and true hands-on process is a perfect combination - it doesn't cease to fascinate me.

I'm also an avid outdoors person (and a guide with a local outdoor adventure company on the weekends), so it's no surprise that the elements of nature subconsciously pour into my work. With the environment on my mind, I use earth-friendly materials: the cotton paper is made from recycled cotton linters of the garment industry (you'd never know, it's feels that luxurious), as well as recycled and post-consumer content recycled kraft papers and envelopes. The cellophane bags that I use for packaging are biodegradable, made from plants not plastics. The smaller impact on the earth, the better.

These days, you will find me working in my own letterpress design studio with 2 presses in it, still in amazement and gratitude that I can actually do this, and that you (yes, you, my awesome customer!) keep coming back to my shop for my tactile creations! In addition to the items that you see in my shop, I also work on custom projects: save the dates & wedding invitation suites, announcements, business cards, and every other kind of letterpress printed ephemera. I'd love to work with you on your next printing project!
