Frequently asked questions
Do you labratory test the gemstones that you sell on Etsy?

Yes, we test all of the gemstones that we buy at Pesebeche Trading Company. While we are not Certified Gemologists, we do have our own gem lab in our home office and have thoroughly studied gemology testing practices.

Our individual gemstone tests include but are not limited to:

1. Microscopic study at 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x. (Specifically studying the inclusions)
2. Refractive Index; Birefringence
3. Specific Gravity
4. Spectrascope
5. Ultraviolet
6. Varios filters; Chelsea Filter for Aquamarine, etc.

If we are unable to make a 100% accurate assessment of a gemstone through our own equipment and experience than we utilize a local gem lab here in Albuquerque or Stone Group Laboratories in Jefferson City for additional help and guidance.

Who do you use for official gemstone certification?

For all gemstone certification and gemstone documents and certificates, we use Stone Group Laboratories located in Jefferson City, Missouri, USA.

Stone Group Laboratories is a Highly Respected and Reputable Private Gemstone Testing Laboratory Servicing Major Jewelers and Wholesale Gem Dealers throughout the World.

See their website for accreditation at http://stonegrouplabs.com/

How are gemstones and cabochons measured?

All gemstones and cabochons are always measured in millimeters (mm). Dimensions are given as length (x) width (x) depth, except for circular, spherical and round stones which are measured as diameter (x) depth.

All gemstones and cabochons are weighed in carats. Carat weight is as follows; 1 Carat (=) 0.2 Grams or 1 Gram (=) 5 Carats.

When selecting gemstones and cabochons, it is best to select them by measured size NOT by weight! Gemstones and cabochon varieties vary in density making Carat weight not a good indication of the actual size of the stone.

How is Gemstone Clarity coded and explained?

IF (=) Loupe Clean or Internally Flawless; free of inclusions

VVS (=) Almost Loupe Clean or Very, Very Slight Inclusions; inclusions barely seen under a 10x microscope

VS (=) Eye Clean or Very Slight inclusions; Inclusions can be seen under a 10x microscope

SI (=) Slightly Included; small inclusions can be seen with the naked eye

I (=) Included; various sized inclusions can be easily seen with the naked eye

Transparent (=) Gemstones that have the property of transmitting light though them without any serious diffusion or impairments

Translucent (=) Allowing light to pass through but NOT transparent

Opaque (=) Doesn't allow light to pass through
