We've spent months trying to wrestle down this "little" bugger since his conception. Our Steampunk Metal Praying Mantis Sculpture took more machining than expected to bring our junk drawer cast-off to life. We are so excited to present him to you now!

Exclusive Interview With Jewelry Designers Pete & Veronica

Excerpted from the interview conducted on February 13th, 2013, by Aura Borealis from See Steal Style Blog: http://seestealstyle.blogspot.co.uk/

How did you decide to work with such diverse materials as hemp and zippers?

Actually it’s a long story, but in a nutshell, it happened like this. As Pete (aka Katy) I’ve always had a passion for beads and hemp and everything macramé. Veronica (aka Mum), on the other hand, sort of fell into zippers. My art has been a long-standing hobby. Mum is a relative newcomer to jewellery design. Together we make a strong (and sometimes volatile) mother-daughter team that somehow manages to balance youth with maturity, the feminine touch with a masculine edge, hippie and steampunk along with most everything else in between. For me, supplementing my income with my craft fulfills a lifelong dream; for Mum, working with her hands is a way of life which, to hear her tell it, is “strictly business”. Yet both of us bring an enormous amount of talent and craftsmanship to the table, taking pride in each others work as if it were our own.

How long does it take you to make each item?

That would depend on the piece, what’s transpired during our day jobs, and what kind of mood we’re in. Sometimes we’ll get oodles of work done during a single episode of Dr. Phil; yet, we’ve experienced more than one bad day when the orders are backing up and we’re still trying to wrestle down a bracelet during back to back reruns on the History Channel (Mum’s choice) or HGTV (my choice). Usually though, we work on several items at a time, with one of us producing the lion’s share of the piece while the other works on the details.

What challenges have you faced as a business owner, and what advice would you give to new sellers?

I think going into an on-line business pretty much blind is probably one of the biggest hurdles we’ve had to conquer. When we first started this, we were so green! We had absolutely, no idea what we were doing. We sent packages the wrong way, weren’t sure of how to post new items…we were a mess. The communities and teams on Etsy have been the BIGGEST help throughout this journey. Just being able to read along with others on the forums who are screaming “help!” just as loud as we were, was a relief, in many ways. We weren’t alone any more.

Another challenge we’ve faced, is keeping our identities pretty much locked up. Pete & Veronica was originally a name I had hoped to use for a band. When that fell through and I was thinking of what to call our Etsy shop, P & V came crawling back. From that moment, I became Pete. And because Mum jumped onto this maiden voyage, she became my Veronica. Till now, we’ve identified as these two fictional characters, and so far, people really like us. My advice though: don’t hide. It makes “coming out”, if you will, that much more difficult. Although, we did meet a customer in person, with the understanding that we are not Pete & Veronica, and everything went really well.

The main piece of advice we can give for new and old sellers: do whatever it takes to make sure the customer is happy. You don’t necessarily have to follow “the customer is always right” rule, just “the customer should be happy” one. That’s our goal, and what we strive for.

What skills have emerged since starting your online shop?

There have been a couple of hidden talents that have popped up since starting P & V. With me, we’ve realized that I can handle all of the customer service side. Talking to people comes naturally for me, and I’ve really appreciated the experience, as it’s made me better at communicating in person as well. For Mum, well, she’s a wonderful photographer. The woman has never picked up a camera, much less shown any interest in photography, until this past summer. Somehow, through very little camera experience, she’s a pro at focus, placement and lighting.

While our first year (well, more like 6 months) on Etsy has been a roller-coaster ride—especially for the odd couple we make— we’ve appreciated every hardship and challenge. It’s all been immensely rewarding. We’re learning to enjoy people for who they are (we simply adore our customers); we’ve made excellent connections (present company included); as well as learned just a huge amount about business and jewellery creation in general. Talents have been unearthed, and I don’t think either of us have been more creative. We've certainly had one hell of a time as Pete & Veronica.

Shipping
We ship everything via U.S. First Class Mail, and also offer a Priority Mail upgrade, within 1-3 business days from purchase of our jewelry and 3-5 business days from purchase of our sculptures. All packages within the U.S. are tracked via USPS. Our items are packaged with care in a bubble wrap mailer. Delicate and glass items, however, are given special consideration.

We'll send you a message letting you know when the item was shipped.

For all international orders: we again ship via U.S. First Class International Mail, but any customs, duties or fees are the customer's responsibility. Please contact us within 60 days of purchase, if you have any problems with your order. It is important for us to provide you with good customer service.

If you are disappointed with your purchase for any reason, let us know. We'll do our best to make it right for you, or you can send it back and we'll reimburse you for the sale once we receive the jewelry in the same condition as it was sent.

Should your item arrive to you with any damages, a new one will be sent to you, after the original has been returned (shipping is on us), free of charge once we receive a photo of the damaged item.
Additional policies and FAQs
Sizing can be a bit of a conundrum when it comes to jewelry, so we've taken it upon ourselves to offer custom sizing. To the right in the item listing screen, you will see a drop down menu marked "Size". When ordering a bracelet or choker, please indicate the size of your wrist/neck before purchasing.

We also offer different clasp types. This is also a drop down menu on the right side of the screen: "Clasp Type". Please also make a selection here before your purchase is completed.
