About the Artist
Peter Bowen studied graphic design at the West of England College of Art in Bristol and graduated with a BA degree. He is an accomplished designer, professional watercolour artist and ceramicist now living near Wells in Somerset, England.

His unique style of whimsical painting and ceramics have earned him an international reputation during the last 40 years with much of his work in private collections in Canada, the United States, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Ireland and England.

My paintings and ceramics are a great joy to create and allow me to spend endless hours dreaming up new designs and applying them to paper and clay. I enjoy drawing, painting and making ceramics and have become fascinated with the design and production of three-dimensional functional objects which are made from earthenware clay.

I roll out the clay (much like you would do with pastry) into slabs of about 0.125-inch (3mm) thickness. I then cut out individual pieces which are then assembled using a mixture called slip which is liquid clay, and this is the glue that holds the pieces together. This process is then reinforced with additional clay to form strong joints. Each piece that I make starts out as an idea based on my artistic and whimsical view of things that is then drawn full size on to tracing paper until I get the design and proportions that look right. I then transfer the design to a template that is made from a thick clear plastic sheet which can be used as a template to cut out the clay.

Each piece is handmade, unique and each one is slightly different. When each piece is assembled it is left to dry for about two weeks. The first firing in my own electric kiln is called a bisque firing to 998° C (1,828°F) this is when the clay becomes a ceramic material. Then I glaze the clock using my own glaze recipes and again each one is unique and hand-painted.

After the glaze is applied and left to dry it is then fired for a second time in my kiln which turns the glaze into a finish that is microwave oven safe, dishwasher safe and most important of all food safe. I do not use lead-based glazes.
