A Quest for Truth and Beauty

I had always viewed lace as so delicate and something that required a real expertise to work with. A major catastrophe with my wedding dress at the hands of a wedding dress "professional" just two days before my wedding, prompted me to conquer my fear of lace!

I received quite a surprise when I took the chance and posted my handiwork on Etsy, which I had only recently discovered at the time. My first mantilla sold! I continued to develop my understanding of how to work with lace by making mantillas and wedding veils and slowly, but surely, women started to buy my mantillas and return for more.

Why make mantillas? I make mantillas because I cannot think of a more beautiful way to display lace than for a woman to cover her head out of reverence for God. Veiling, as it is known, is an ancient practice that most Catholic women in North America are coming to (re)discover decades after the practice fell away.

Most of the lace I use in my work is made primarily in Switzerland. I try to the greatest possible extent to obtain materials that I know are ethically made, meaning that the maker is earning a fair living wage. Sadly, very little lace is made here in North America, which, I believe, speaks to the dearth of femininity we see on a daily basis.

Women buy mantillas for themselves, as gifts for their daughters, sisters and friends. Men buy mantillas for their sisters, mothers, and girl friends. It has been really nice to help them create that special gift. I have sold mantillas to women in about twenty countries, as far away as Japan, South Korea, and West Java.

I think what I love best about my work and my little Etsy shop is the opportunity to interact with people far and wide. Some of my interactions have even led to friendships, which is a true benefit of Etsy.

Thank you for visiting!

Mantillas can be hand-washed in warm water with a dime-sized amount of liquid soap and then rinsed and hung to dry. Iron the mantilla at your own risk. If you do, please test the iron first, use steam, and work quickly.
