About

It All Started with a Woman...

Several years ago, I was combing a flea market with my Dad in Louisiana when I saw her: an old photograph of a beautiful, nameless flapper girl in an Art Deco frame, on sale for $5.

Her face captivated me instantly. Who was this woman? And what was she doing in a dusty flea market?

I knew I couldn't leave her there, so I purchased her and instantly named her Gracie. When I returned back home to Michigan I put Gracie in a place of honor in our living room. She stayed in her Art Deco frame for months, serenely watching our comings and goings.

Every time I looked at her, I couldn't help but wonder about the life she'd lead. Had she been in love? Had she accomplished her dreams? What had happened to her?

One afternoon I was staring at her picture, asking these same questions again, and decided to take her out of the frame for the first time to see if anything was written on the back of the portrait.

I pried off the back of the frame, and gingerly pulled her photograph out of the matte. And suddenly, I was holding three photographs: two more portraits had been hiding behind the initial picture, and they were even more stunning than the first.

Only explorers who have discovered an unopened tomb, adventurers who have found a lost city, or vintage lovers who unexpectedly find a hidden treasure within something else can know what I felt at that moment! I felt like I'd discovered a secret that had been lost for decades. The mystery only deepened.

I have never been able to discover who Gracie really is. But all three of her portraits are now framed and hang on the wall in my home. Every time I look at her, I can't help but wonder at her life, and the circumstances that led to these portraits being sold at a flea market.

Since my discovery of Gracie, I've had a love affair for treasure hunting. Every vintage item has a history, and a story, that new items just don't have yet. They have character and idiosyncrasies that make them far more interesting to me than anything that's brand new and works perfectly. And thanks in part to Gracie, I started Petticoat, Please! to share the treasures I find with others.
