About

Why Pflum's Thumbs???

I know, it's a bit different. When I decided to open a shop, I set out trying to decide on a name. There a lot of "Designs by", "xxxx Designs", stuff like that, but I wanted something really unique, just like the items I would be selling. Since my last name is Pflum (the "P" is silent, like Michelle Pfeiffer's name 😉 ), I decided to create a shop name that contained my name. But what in the world do you do with Pflum? Well, I create things with my hands and hands have thumbs, without which I couldn't hold a knitting needle or crochet hook, and... it rhymes!! Bingo! Pflum's Thumbs!

So how did I get started in crafting?

As a child, I learned how to knit from my mother. Now, she is right-handed and I am left-handed. Lucky for me, my grandmother was also left-handed and my mother learned to knit from her, so I didn't have to do the mirror image thing like you do when learning from an opposite-handed person. However, I stopped knitting after my first sweater and didn't start again until my late 20's. By that time, I had pretty much forgotten what I had learned from my mother so I got a book and re-learned.

As for crochet, I guess I inherited the love of it. My paternal grandmother crocheted all the time with teeny tiny steel hooks. It fascinated me to watch her hands move over the work. However, this grandmother had no patience to teach, so when I was in my early 20's I got a book and taught myself. Having no background in it at all except watching my grandmother, my first efforts were.... interesting. I kept at it and figured out what I was doing wrong. I haven't stopped since.

Somewhere along the way, I started designing as well as creating stuff. Now my head is always filled with new ideas to try. The problem is that I can think of things to make a lot faster than I can make them. So please, take your time and browse though my shop. If you see something you like, but want a different color, size, whatever, just convo me and let's see what we can come up with.
And check back often. Even I don't know where my creative process will lead me.

As always,

Laura
