ABOUT PICNIQUE AT HOME
All Picnique at home rugs and wallcoverings are hand made using only natural, organic and sustainable fibres. Each rug is made on your size choice or measurement for a natural, unique and luxurious decoration of your home, organization or company. Finally some pieces are hand dyed using natural plant dyes. Items are made at the Picnique at home studio from start to finish in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
We offer an extensive range of rugs and wallcoverings designed to be used in spaces. The Picnique at home collection is the perfect juxtaposition -- luxurious and natural, elegant yet relaxed, sophisticated and rustic, polished yet casual. Because we only use natural fibres and colours each piece compliments the other, yet stands alone in strength and style. Natural colours always match with each other.
Because all pieces are hand made and sometimes dyed please expect variations in each product. These subtle differences should be celebrated as the mark of a hand made piece created especially for you!

HOW TO ORDER
PLEASE SELECT YOUR SIZE, SHAPE AND COLOR CHOICE FOR EACH ITEM WHEN ORDERING. Also please feel free to include the measurements if you like to have a smaller or bigger rug made especially for you.
♥ I can work with measurements up to 160 inches
COLOUR:
Some rugs are dyed by hand with natural dyes.
*IMPORTANT NOTE ON COLOUR* - Colours will vary depending on your computers colour settings and from dye bath to dye bath. This is the nature of dyeing things by hand on natural/organic fibres.
✳ Even the same fibres can take the dye differently due to seasonal changes that are more prominent in natural/organic fibers, some colours will be darker after a while (Cutch).

THE FIBRES I USE ARE THE FOLLOWING:
DUTCH HEATH SHEEP WOOL - are grown in The Netherlands on social farms, hobby farms and in natural parks. The sheep are treated with care on a daily basis. They are sheared by professionals at the end of may - the beginning of june. These sheep are one of the eldest natural West-European sheep breeds, also helping to preserve nature by grazing the gras of our natural parks. I wash the wool carefully by hand and dry it in the sun and wind before using it for making rugs and accessories.
MERINO WOOLS - A superior quality wool that embodies all of the intuitive characteristics we have come to love about wool. We use small quantities of merino wools because of it's wonderful "sticky" qualities for felting.
TUSSAH SILK – Tussah Silk is called better for the environment than Mulberry Silk. We use small quantities in our rugs for its beautiful shiny qualities.

THE DYES I USE ARE THE FOLLOWING:
CUTCH - a historical warm golden brown dye that comes from the heartwood of the cutch tree (Acacia catechu). It is both light-fast and wash-fast.
WELD (Reseda Luteola) - has been a commonplace, yet well loved dye ever since the stone ages: this Mediterranean herb is the oldest dye plant in the world. Out of all the dyes that produce yellow, Weld gives the most intense and long lasting results. The entire plant, including the seeds, is dried and used.
WALLNUT HUSKS - ingredients for very strong colours. They produce strong and long lasting colours, from lighter to darker browns.
NATURAL INDIGO - Indigo dye has been used for thousands of years by civilizations all over the world to dye fabric blue. Natural indigo has a high proportion of impurities such as indirubins, that give beautiful colour variations. Like fine wines, the blue you get depends on where the indigo was grown and the weather at the time. Synthetic indigo on the other hand, produces an even blue that never varies.
Natural indigo is a sustainable dye; after the pigment has been extracted the plant residue can be composted and used as a fertiliser and the water reused to irrigate crops. Natural indigo can often be traced to its country of origin, and even to the farm where it was produced. In buying it, you will be helping to give sustainable employment to rural population in developing countries. Synthetic indigo on the other hand is extracted from petrochemicals and its manufacture produces hazardous waste. By using natural indigo, we'll be helping the environment and reducing the use of petrochemicals.
MORDANTS:
Picnique at home only uses alum as a mordant. Alum is a substance which is non-damaging to the environment.
