Announcement    everything in this collection is handmade in toronto by textile artist,
heather shaw who started p i ’ l o over twenty years ago while at art school.

it began from an absolute love and need to make functional items for the home with a simple and natural aesthetic and has been a labour of love ever since.

each piece is made carefully and responsibly by heather and the women or friends that help her out of a coach house studio behind an old victorian house that once housed a sausage factory. it is a very calm and soothing space with natural light and plenty of inspiration from all the fabrics, notions and vintage supplies that are used.

hopefully each piece will bring happiness and be passed down to future generations . . .

p i ' l o backyard studio

i have been making things and selling them for as long as i can remember as i started while at art college and never looked back. what i have made and designed has changed over the years as my own life has changed and i feel very lucky that i have been able to follow my own instinct and make what i want. when my two boys started drawing pictures, we turned those into embroidered pillows. when WE needed an advent calendar ~ we started selling advent calendars for others. ( you get the idea )
for the last 12 years, i have been working out of my backyard studio. it was an old sausage factory in downtown toronto and is the nicest place to work in the world. there is a skylight over the large worktable, so even on the dreariest canadian winter days, it still feels warm and cozy. i love organizing my supplies and all the finished products on the shelves as it is great to see at a glance, all that we have produced .
we take care packaging each item so that it is special and love the thought of where all the things we make end up. hopefully they will be cherished for years to come.

thanks for visiting….

    Owner, Designer, Creator

i grew up in toronto, canada and have always loved making things. after studying art history, i went to art college on both coasts to receive a bfa in textiles. it was so much fun to make art full time and to learn how to weave, print, weld, etc.

Production partners

  • embroiderer

    Toronto, ON

local embroiderer does some of the pillows we do,the bless you hankies, book covers and the cases with words on them. we send them the cut fabric and the designs which they digitize and we can choose the colour of thread from hundreds of options.

  • screenprinter

    Toronto, ON

we have used a small local screen printing studio to print our tea towels, dandelion hankies and some of the pillows for quite a few years. they are great to collaborate with and saves us lots of mess and space in the studio.

  • home sewer

    Mississauga, ON

i can honestly say that i have the best sewer helping me (which is good because i am not the best sewer myself). she works from home & is so precise, fast and most of all loves doing the work. we are good friends and i respect her craft so much.
