What a fun outfit!

I grew up in the Kent countryside, in an old Victorian cottage that was (and still is!) in the midst of being renovated. I was always going to be a crafty girl - I enjoyed drawing, making things, gardening, cross stitch and knitting from an early age. I remember sitting in my Dad's workshop, aged 8 or so, trying to make the offcuts into something resembling a dolls house while he finished off a window frame. I sewed my first item of clothing, with the help of my Mum, aged 10 - a pair of shorts that I wore for pretty much the whole summer! The feeling of making something that I could use sowed a seed that has grown at different rates over the intervening years.

At school I loved art and design and made a swinging garden chair for my A level Design and Technology project that was a runner up in the Audi Young Designer Of The Year competition. This set me on the path for completing a degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. I spent a few years after graduating making furniture to commission, showing my work at Craft in Focus fairs and working part time for another furniture maker. Taking a piece of rough sawn wood and turning it into a piece of fine furniture will always give me that little bubble of joy - you can't beat the "I made that and it is both beautiful and functional" feeling!

About 4 years after graduating I trained to be a Design and Technology teacher and my first job took me away from Kent and off to Oxford where I taught for 6 years. I love seeing children develop their creative skills and seeing their excitement and awe at making something all by themselves! Marking and meetings - not so much!

In 2015 I had a baby girl. This gave me the perfect excuse to give up the evermore stressful world of teaching and take some time out. After about 6 months I got itchy hands - I needed to be creating something! So I got out my sewing machine and made a few dribble bibs for my daughter. Then I made her a dress. Then someone asked me to make a dress for their granddaughter, and then dungarees for their grandsons... and before I knew it I had a little business on the go! I specialise in fun dungarees, simple dresses and tailored style shorts and trousers.

I try to run Pip & Joy in an environmentally friendly way. The fabrics I use are 100% cotton and any scraps collected and recycled. Orders are wrapped in recycled acid-free tissue paper and posted in either reused plastic postage bags, that my fabric was delivered in, or cardboard boxes. I try to support small businesses in where I source fabric, patterns and packaging.

I love being creative and crafty - I'm at my happiest when I'm busy making things, usually with about five different projects on the go at the same time! Everything that is done at Pip & Joy is done by me!
