About PiscesCeramics
Bob Brocken FIsh Maker
I've been making ceramic fish for about 15 years. I was working in the corporate world and was burning out, so I started working for a friends' family ceramic tile business. I loved working with clay and the forms. They made relief tiles and also ceramic fish and I was enamored with the process so I began making forms on my own.
I cast real fish in plaster to make a template and press clay in. Then, I take the clay form out and trim it and add details like, gills, fins, eyes, teeth and some surface texture. After the clay dries completely, I bisque fire it in an electric kiln to completely dry out and harden the form.
Then the fun starts and I brush on the glazes in layers to give the fish a sometimes realistic and more often , "Artistic" appearance after it is fired in the kiln a second time to melt the glazes.
I was always fascinated with fish and as a child made frequent visits to the Shedd Aquarium from our suburban Chicago home. I would take the "L" downtown with my family and I could name virtually every fish in the place. Now, I still love learning about the different species of fish and also about ceramics and the endless variables involved with clay, glaze, firings...
I have a studio in Northeast Minneapolisl, MN which is a fun and vibrant arts community.
I currently have over 100 forms and am always adding more. If you have any questions, please contact me.
