About

Without fashion she's just plastic

I have been sewing since I was a child. I am not professionally taught. As a matter of fact I only took one sewing class which taught me the basics of reading patterns and piecing them together when I was 12.

I grew up around a seamstress. My mother. As a child I remember her making bridesmaids gowns and manufactured clothes on her commercial serger. When my sister and I where children my mother would create matching dresses for us. I remember how much I hated it but it was through my mother I garnered a taste for creating things.

I had taken a break from sewing for many years and then became interested again. I began making clothes for myself and my daughter. Shortly thereafter I began collecting Blythe dolls. They are big headed dolls with big eyes and lots of personality.

In September of 2007 I opened Plastic Fashion. My husband helped me come up with my shop name. Originally I was going to name it Plastic Passion but instead went with Plastic Fashion and I added the tag line "without fashion she's just plastic." This being the fact because my dolls are more than just plastic.

I take patterns from here and there and modify them or come up with something completely different. My ideas stem from 1940's to 1970's little girl fashions. Sometimes I look at vintage patterns or modern dresses and get an idea on a new design. I also look to vintage patterns for color combinations or fabric inspiration.

I have an extensive selection of fabrics. My preference is for reproduction fabrics, cute, and retro prints. Especially those to Blythe scale.

Unlike most I usually have an idea in my head and it must come out. I don't draw the design because my drawings are terrible. I commence to making a pattern and then test it out until I get it right. Sometimes a tedious process. Once I get it right I feel accomplished and then make the final dress. Matter of fact each dress or set is made one by one. It's not time efficient but it gives me greater joy to make each little dress this way.

At the end of the day my intention is to make something cute that you will want to put on your doll. If my dolls can't wear it, neither will yours.
