What are Maki?

When I started Play at Life Fiber Arts in 2009, I named my long color repeat yarns Maki because they looked so much like sushi rolls when wound into their center-pull ball.

Most of my Maki are gradients, the line where the colors shift is blurry. There are two exceptions: Loud and Proud and Rainbow in the Dark are both striping Maki, the line where the colors change is sharp like a traditional self-striping yarn.

Right now, I am only able to dye Maki on lace and fingering weight bases. Gradient and striping sets are available on sport, DK, and aran weights though!

Base info:

Mirth: my alpaca blend base line available in Heavy Lace (hand wash only)
Wishingstar: my silk blend base line available in Fingering and Lace
Scrumpet: my sw merino/cashmere/nylon base line available in Sock and Light Fingering
Pounce: my untreated BFL base line currently available in Fingering (hand wash only)
Telyn: my tencel blend base line currently available in Fingering
Jest: my high twist base line available in Sock, Sport, and Aran
Boundless: my 4ply base line available in Sock and DK

Additional Policies and FAQs

All reclaimed yarn is measured with a yarn meter.
All yarn and fiber comes with a tag listing its Specifics.
I am currently using the Ravelry Standard Yarn Weights chart to measure WPI for reclaimed yarns.

Kinky yarn? Reclaimed and Gradient yarns are dyed in blank form. I do soak and hang the reclaimed yarns to relax out much of the kink, but there will likely be some remaining. You may want to go down a needle size for your project. In general, the kink should not affect your finished project unless you are working at a very loose gauge or using very open, lace stitch patterns. Gradient yarns are unravelled while still damp and will have a very slight kink (much less than the reclaimed yarns.) Since most sock projects are worked at a tight gauge, this should not affect your finished object.

Knots happen! I often find knots when I reclaim yarn or yarn will break when I am unwinding reclaimed yarns. Milled yarn breaks coming off the mill equipment and gets joined with a knot before it even gets to me sometimes. Most reclaimed yarns can be wet spliced and this is generally what I do when I find a knot or break in reclaimed yarn. Yarn that has more than one knot will be discounted.

Dye lots can vary greatly from lot to lot!
