I make bow ties because I love to wear them.

A few years ago, I started wearing ties. I felt professional and put together. But I was bored. Even with fun fabrics, regular neck ties were just too…normal. I wanted to express some personality.

Then I discovered bow ties and fell in love. They had enough style to be classy and enough quirk to make me feel unique. I managed to find a nice, affordable one at a Winners. After wearing it, I wanted more…a lot more…in all sorts of colors and patterns. But every bow tie I saw was outside my price range. I was discouraged.

But then I had an epiphany. I could make my own!

First stop – fabric store. O.M.G. So many choices. Plaids, paisleys, stripes, flowers, checks and more in every color of the rainbow. I came home with a bag full of options. Of course, then I had to learn how to use a sewing machine. My mom had tried to teach me numerous times as a kid, but I just didn’t have the motivation…until now. I practiced until I passed her stringent quality control.

People started asking me where I got my bow ties and I realized I had stumbled upon an opportunity. The result is Playfully Dapper – bow ties constructed with carefully chosen, quality fabric – fun, classy, and everything inbetween. I plan to make only a few of each pattern so I can keep going back to wander through the aisles of delightfully tempting bolts of fabrics, finding new inspiration.

In addition to each bow tie’s limited availability, I made two decisions about the kind of ties I wanted to offer: 1) Many of them would be reversible so that I (and others like me) could enjoy a wide variety of looks without breaking the bank and without running out of storage space and 2) They would be self-tied to satisfy the purists but come with a hook (which allows pre-tying) to prevent excluding those with less time or skill.

Whatever your style (bold, playful, soft, conservative), whatever your gender, whether you’ve never worn a bow tie or have hundreds, I hope you find a treasure here to call your own. And of course, check back often to see what new, delightful fabrics I’ve discovered and put together for all you dapper folks.

In the world outside of Playfully Dapper, I wear bow ties while teaching university courses, managing a research lab, going on dates, attending queer slow dances, and generally any time I feel like adding a little style or quirk to my outfit.

For me, selecting a bow tie is form of self-expression. Each bow tie I wear expresses another facet of me, whether that’s an enduring part of my character or just my mood on that day. Every bow tie wearing experience is unique - each time I tie one, it looks just a little bit different. But fun or stylish, I want to look dapper and thus value quality craftsmanship.

These are the values I seek to impart through Playfully Dapper. I won’t make a lot of any one pattern, always seeking the joy of a new fabric combination. With my reversible bow ties, I try to combine different styles or levels of playfulness to give you the greatest variety possible. Because each bow tie is made by hand, it will never be 100% like any other bow tie (meaning that the bow tie you receive might look slightly different than its picture). But every bow tie will be carefully checked for quality construction and will arrive pressed and ready to wear.

My bow ties are not marked for gender. I am a woman. I am queer. I believe everyone can look good in a bow tie – man, woman, trans, androgynous, genderqueer, child, pet, alien, teddy bear, etc.

Returns and exchanges
If you are unsatisfied with the quality of your order, please contact me immediately. I carefully check every item before shipping but acknowledge that no one is perfect. I will endeavour to fix or replace the item immediately. I am not, however, responsible for any damage that occurs during shipping.

I try to provide as many details as possible on the product pages so you can make a fully informed choice. I also endeavour to take pictures that accurately reflect the colors. However, if the item simply isn’t what you expected, I will be happy to exchange unworn, unused items within 30 days provided you cover the cost of shipping.

Please carefully check the size range indicated. If you are unsure whether the item will fit the person it is being purchased for, adjustments in size can be made for a small additional fee. Please contact me for more information before ordering. If adjustments are requested after shipping, you are responsible for shipping costs to send the item back.
My prices reflect my desire to keep my products as affordable as possible while covering my costs and labor. The price depends on the quality of the material (I aim for high quality cotton but occasionally a pattern is so compelling, I’ll use a slightly less quality fabric but charge accordingly), how difficult it is to work with (slippery fabric is my nemesis), and whether it is reversible.

Playfully Dapper accepts major credit cards, debit, and Etsy gift cards. Sales tax is not currently being charged.

If you need to cancel your order, please contact me immediately. Orders cannot be cancelled after the item has shipped.
In order to provide the most economical shipping possible, bow ties come untied, folded crisply in a 6x9” bubble envelope. If you would like me to pre-tie yours or provide a gift box, please contact me to make arrangements.

I’m honestly still figuring out shipping. Right now my shipping price reflects what I was told at the post office for the basic bubble envelope described above which fits up to three bow ties, sent via Regular Post. Currently this is $2 within Canada, $5 to the U.S. and $7.50 Internationally. I believe shipping times range between 2 and 9 days for Canada and the U.S. and may take between 4 and 6 weeks Internationally. If you would like an expedited package, please contact me for a quote. I will update this section as I learn more.

You, the purchaser, are responsible for any custom duties or import taxes. Note that I cannot predict, and am therefore not responsible, for any customs delays.
