About

Plywerk Beginnings...

Plywerk began in the dark, damp recesses of Kim Nguyen's and Kjell van Zoen's basement in Northwest Portland. Kim, a photographer, needing to mount a photo, grabbed a piece of discarded plywood from the aforementioned dark, cold basement and glued a photo to it. A light bulb beamed from atop Kjell's head, temporarily blinding his wife. From that one piece of disposable wood, a sustainable Ma and Pa business was formed.

They began selling their modern, artisanal and earth-friendly wares at local art walks, moving up to the big time of the Portland Saturday Market. There they met like-minded artists and together they succeeded in opening up a co-op shop of their very own.

Since the claustrophobic basement beginnings in 2006, Plywerk has grown in size and demand. We are now in a large warehouse with approximately 15 employees. Plywerk continues to branch out, to not only fill the demand for our product, but to strengthen the bond with other Portland artists and businesses. We are part of the local economy and know that our growth means the growth of our community.

!!!!IMPORTANT SIZE NOTES!!!

All Plywerk panels are made 1/8" to 1/2" less than the stated size. This gives you some bleed to trim the image and get a perfectly clean edge. If you want your 5x5 to be exactly 5"x5" (and not 4 7/8" x 4 7/8") then be sure to request a custom order.

Plywerk is handmade in Portland, Oregon by sandal-wearing, tofu-eating, bike-riders.
