I began making hand-sewn animals when my own children were small. I would use scraps of fabric to sew small mice and long-legged rabbits for them to play with. Years later, I began to make animals again and opened Pogoshop. I photographed them in the woods where I live. Many of my customers told me that their children followed Pogoshop, so I wrote my descriptions for these children, giving pogos names and a bit of story about their adventures in the forest. After a long career of teaching first grade this came easily for me. You can read more about that time in this Etsy blog post.
Pogoshop has grown now to include rabbits and mice, elephants and alligators, wolves and pigs. I'm creating new designs all the time and having lots of fun watching them come to life. Influences on my work, past and present, include the young children who were my students, my love for children's literature, the wonderful Riverbanks Zoo that my little grandson and I visit each week, and my home in the forest that grounds me in nature. The little girls who first played with my early creations, my talented artist daughters, are my greatest inspirations. You can meet them and find their beautiful work at jenray.net and dannaray.com.
I'm proud that Pogoshop animals are sustainable toys, created from repurposed materials, and designed for real play. Knowing that they go from being a discarded coat or sweater, to my washer, wool bin, and sewing basket, to new homes and new lives around the world just amazes me. It's a great satisfaction to have work that I love go from my hands to yours. Thank you for visiting Pogoshop!
Pogos are created from up-cycled wool that has been washed in hot, soapy water. When they need a bath, I recommend that you hand wash them in cool water with mild detergent.
