About

"So, Pol, you're kind of crafty, right?"

I have been crafting my entire life. My mother taught me how to knit, sew, crochet, make lace and various other crafts when I was young. When I was a teenager, I would save up all my money and go to the wool factory to buy big batches of yarn. After high school I got Akte-K, a Dutch degree in teaching crafts to children.

When my daughter Lizzy left for university, she stayed in a dorm. To make her new room feel more like home, she asked if we could sew a patchwork quilt together. It was made out of repurposed jeans and t-shirts, printed and embroidered fabric and knit patches, with a fleece back. After that quilt, I was addicted to making things again.

After a few months, my daughter turned to me and said: "Pol, if you're not going to stop crafting, you need to start an Etsy shop."

Lizzy went away on a half year internship with instructions for me to make as many 'cool handmade things' as possible. When she came back, we opened the shop together.

Often times, the way an item gets made is like this: Lizzy will come up to me with a piece of paper with a drawing and a ton of notes scribbled in the margins ("stripes are cute! Use that soft gray yarn you have, or maybe the green! Is this even possible to knit?") Once I have figured out if it is possible to knit and what she means with 'that one cool ridge-pattern', I'll draw up my own design, add a few notes and start knitting (or sewing, or crocheting).

Other times, I'll buy some beautiful yarn and lay it out on the table and go about my day. After I've passed it a few times, I'll know: this should really be a stole (or a scarf, or a hat)! Then I'll write up a pattern and start knitting. Sometimes, I change the design along the way.

We try to repurpose materials such as old jeans (I have a stack of old denim that reaches up to my shoulder, everyone brings me their old jeans!) and clothing.

All of the items at PolClary are one of a kind. When I'm working on something, my mind is already full of new ideas: ways to improve an item, variations on a theme, a matching item, or a completely different item I want to make after this one. Why make the same thing twice when you have so many ideas? This way, it never feels like work, and the buyer always gets something unique and special.
