This is another unique work of artistic beauty! Lorraine has a gift for finding formerly loved treasures and breathing new life into them. She creates pure textile magic, and this gorgeous piece is no exception. The design elements and beautiful reclaimed materials combine into an elegant, glamorous, visually stunning dress.

I love everything about this collar, cuffs, bow tie set, and so does my dog, Bodhi, who pranced about the house showing the other dogs his special attire. My female dog wants to know why she didn't have something special to try on, and she gave me the grumpiest look ever over the whole "fancy dress for boy dog situation." I'll be scouring the Pondhopper shop for female dog accoutrements. All of the items in this tuxedo-like ensemble are designed to be fabulously functional and dog-comfortable while simultaneously visually stunning. Equally wonderful is the fact that Lorraine, the genius artist/designer/seamstress/person extraordinaire who is the actual pond hopper, donated the entire proceeds of this purchase to the rescue organization from whom I adopted my dogs. How amazing is that?

Initially, my husband wondered about my purchase of TWO Pondhopper lace items--a hooded top and this bolero/cropped cardigan--until he saw how completely different the pieces are. Despite being constructed from similar materials, the works are distinctly unique, with their own individual personalities and voices. Like all Pondhopper creations, this cardigan is enchanting, something outside the norm, completely extraordinary. It is a joy to wear, as is every Pondhopper piece. I am always happy when I am attired in such breathtaking beauty.

I now have three pieces of wearable art from Lorraine at The Pondhopper, and I marvel at the artistry and inspiration at the heart of each garment. Every time I wear one of the pieces, I am delighted by some intentional flourish or combination of reclaimed elements that I hadn't fully noted during the last wearing of the item. This captivating lace top combines skull lace, floral lace, black sequins, black velvet, and faux gemstone flowers, all in a flattering cut. Skulls, flowers, lace, sequins, and velvet: What could be better?

pondhopper: 1. one who has taken up residence in a foreign country. 2. one who has left their native country to live elsewhere
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is not a time I can remember when I didn't create - from my very earliest memories of spending hours making simple daisy chains through painting, sculpting and sewing in school and on to altered art and textiles - I have always created. I grew up helping my Mum sew my school uniforms and dance costumes and learned about photography from my Dad - I can still remember having to pick my way to the sink through dangling strips of drying negatives, or carefully entering the attic darkroom to watch the magical process of images appearing on blank sheets of photographic paper (pre-digital of course!)

There is a dark side to the fashion industry that is starting to come to light where things such as modern day slavery and environmental pollution reveal the true cost of fast fashion. The more I learnt about these things the more passionate I became about "slow fashion", a term coined by Kate Fletcher in 2007 (Centre for Sustainable Fashion, UK). While it is a very small contribution, I felt I could be part of the solution rather than the problem through my love of creating. My designs use salvaged materials destined for the landfill and marry them together to give them a new life. It allows the lost and discarded to be found, loved and reborn.

I am a self-taught artist and designer working without rules to find my own way through creative processes. I love to work in mediums that cannot be fully controlled, where you never really know where the process will lead. I have fallen in love with the unknown - where the final outcome is always a bit of a revelation, producing one of kind pieces each holding their own surprises. Imperfections are celebrated and combined with artful tattering and asymmetry to enhance the personality of each piece. Edges are usually left raw so they will gently fray and soften over time and layers of visible stitching provide wandering textures. Each piece is a unique creation made spontaneously by hand without patterns.

Every handmade item from pondhopper studio has a heartbeat. Infused with whispers of times past, each has a story to tell, a new life to live.
