About

A whole world of cuteness.

As a young child growing up in Jersey in the Channel Islands, I learned to knit & crochet from my grandmother, my mother & my two aunts. Jersey has a long tradition of making & exporting fine quality knitted clothes & goods. The word "jersey" means "pullover" and originates from the name of the island where my family is from. I now feel that in a way, by making the Poppeteers, I'm continuing my family & island tradition.

But how did the Poppeteers come about? Apart from a few years in my teens, I never really stopped making things. When I was about 22, a friend gave me a photocopy of a knitting pattern for a very cute long-eared bunny in a big jumper. I made one for myself (which I still have), & then started making them for friends as gifts for their new-born babies. I got such a lot of positive feedback about these bunnies, particularly people asking where they could buy them. As a struggling musician, the idea slowly took root in my brain that this could be a way in which I could make a little extra income.

However, I never had any idea who the original designer of that knitted rabbit was & I instinctively felt that it wasn't right to sell someone else's design. That's when I set about designing the Poppeteers with the idea of eventually marketing them. The story just grew from there. Starting with an odd ball of grey mohair that was lying around, I made the first three Poppeteers - a cat, a dog & a rabbit. Their paws were a different colour to their bodies but they were basically one colour & their features were embroidered. It was when I made about the sixth Poppeteer that I felt like the design was starting to come together. This was Willis, a black & beige cat, who was both the cutest & cheekiest animal I'd made so far.

Willis' strong character has been very influential in the Poppeteer story. For me, a Poppeteer is not just a crocheted animal. He or she is an individual who comes from a specific place (Thelonious monkey is from Mexico, Dylis the fox is from Wales). They have specific likes & dislikes, fave foods or music. These details bring each Poppeteer to life. Willis is a prime example of this. He loves to play the guitar, listen to reggae, jazz & prog rock (particularly if there's an electric guitar solo). He loves cookies & chocolate; hates baths & is in a long-term relationship with his feminist girlfriend Mary Lou, also a cat. Consequently, he has a very interesting & fun Facebook page where he now has three times as many friends as I do; his music video has hundreds more views on Youtube than my own music band &, when I bump into friends in the street, their first question is usually "How's Willis?"

The lives of the Poppeteers are reflected in the scenes used in the cards, badges, stickers & calendars which are also available. I'm very lucky to have found some adorable, brightly coloured dolls' house furniture from the 1960s which is the perfect size for the Poppeteers.

Making a crochet animal look cute isn't always as easy as it may seem. Both my mother & Grandmother never really liked embroidering & whenever there was a doll or animal that needed a face, it was nearly always me that was given the task. Somehow I had a knack or a good eye which meant that the faces usually came out well-balanced & often very cute too. I feel that my early training in this has helped to ensure the appeal & success of the Poppeteer characters.

Once I have the body & head of a Poppeteer ready, I often take quite a while studying it, deciding which side would work better as the front or back, like Michaelangelo or Rodin would contemplate their blocks of marble before getting to work on a new statue! I feel that at this stage it's important not to rush. I take time trying different positions for the arms, legs or ears. The size of the eyes & their placement can completely change a character. The last stage is the embroidery of the features which is also a very important ingredient in how the animals will finally look. Many is the time I've started the nose & mouth & had to redo it because I wasn't happy with the end expression.

Finally, the quality of the wool which I use to make the Poppeteers is crucial. I try to use yarn which is either 100% natural or blends which contain at least some natural wool. The wools which tend to give the best texture to the Poppeteers are mohair, alpaca & merino which have a slightly fuzzy or soft texture a bit like soft fur. As fashions in wool, like fashions in clothes, seem to change every year, some of the original wools I used are now no longer available. At first, I was very disappointed, writing to the companies asking if they might have any left in a storeroom somewhere. Now I realise that those Poppeteers will be limited editions & that it also gives me an excuse to go searching for replacements in both my favourite & new wool shops.
