About

We simply want to make unique and useful artwork that has a place in everyday life that anyone can afford.

Port Rhombus Design studio was formed in 2010 by Matt Kennedy and has been featured in international design review sites such as Design Milk, Core77, Dezeen among others, as well as physically published in numerous books in regards to design and fabrication ideology.

Our studio is an amalgamation of interests having been trained in Fine Arts, Chemical Engineering and Architecture in addition to Industrial Design. However, despite our knowledge in regards to material sciences and technical manufacturing we've always enjoyed imagining and building something from scratch ourselves more than anything. We therefore left "the office" and built a design studio and fabrication workshop in Portland, OR that embraces handicraft with digital fabrication capabilities to explore the unique intersection of art, science, craft, design and manufacturing.

As much as quality craftsmanship and innovative materials and processes are the heart of the work we do, we don't feel this is a license to make American made products that only a few can afford and remain committed to "democratic" design principles. We refuse to subscribe to the notion that higher prices should be used as a tool to inflate an objects perceived value. We simply want to make quality unique and useful artwork from fine materials that has a place in everyday life that anyone can afford.

Additionally Matt Kennedy and partner Mix Sidthilaw also operate DIGITAL CRAFT Design & Fabrication services in Portland where we use our design and production expertise to help other artists, designers and creative businesses produce their own American made creative goods through affordable small batch production with CNC router and laser technology.
