From Teacher to Candle Maker

Hello and thank you for visiting Fleetwood Candle Co.!

Fleetwood Candle Co. began in 2019 under it's previous name "Pothead Planters".
While working as a Special Education teacher in Rhode Island, I was constantly creating art projects for my students. When the COVID 19 pandemic hit, teaching through the computer was a massive challenge and conducting art projects through a screen was virtually impossible for my classroom. I feel a deep need to create art daily, and I began filling this void with self taught programs at home.

What first began as a love for painting, quickly spiraled into decorating every planter in my home with funky shapes and colors. My plants were happy, and I was beginning to develop confidence as an artist outside of being a teacher.

As the months continued, I experimented with polymer clay and began making playful earring designs. When I wore them to my classes, my students would always compliment them and say that they made me look like Ms. Frizzle! I realized that those rainbow shaped earrings sparked a little bit of joy in my students, and in myself. I began making earrings for my teacher friends and eventually made enough pairs to sell at my first craft market.

After the success of the market, I had a surge of creativity inspired by my community. In the winter of 2020, I decided to order my first batch of soy wax to create candles as Christmas gifts for friends and family. I decorated the candles with small clippings from the pine tree at my apartment and crystal chips from my collection. While they were far from perfect, the candles were a hit and I decided to continue working to perfect the craft.

In 2021, after eloping in the Rocky Mountains, my husband and I moved from our home in Rhode Island to Colorado. Our relocation allowed me to leave my teaching career in order to pursue my art business full time. The happiness that ensued from following our hearts has been priceless and overflows into our creations. Since arriving in Colorado, our candles and earrings have been hosted in over 10 retail locations throughout the state, as well as bazaars and local art shows in the Denver area.

Fleetwood Candle Co. is a small business that was born out of a spark. It was a joyful experiment during a dark time, that blossomed into a garden of excitement for myself and my family. I hope that you feel the love and energy that is behind every piece.
