Necessity is the mother of invention... and sometimes an awful lot of fun, too!

Spread ink across a raised surface, then transfer that ink onto another surface, like paper or fabric, and you've got - essentially - a block print. The lovely thing about them is that once you've made that block, you can in turn make a number of prints from it, so while each hand-pulled print is unique because of variables in the ways ink and paper interact, they're also quite affordable, and i'm delighted to have a way to make original art accessible.

PressingNeeds was born out of my desperation to make gifts one cash-poor Christmas season... and then when i showed the prints i'd made to friends, they started asking about buying them. I was happy to oblige, and started consigning the prints at a few local places, and opened up this Etsy shop.

All my designs are original, adapted from my own photos and drawings. I carve the blocks (linoleum or soft rubber) myself, and pull each print by hand. I love experimenting with different combinations of ink and paper and framing materials!

The newest addition to the studio is a rescued 1939 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop press, allowing me to add letterpress printed items, cards, invitations, and stationery to my offerings, using vintage type and printer's blocks, as well as linoleum blocks i've created myself for distinctive, fun, and expressive paper goods.

PressingNeeds block prints are made by hand from blocks carved by Suzanne Grobbel. Though formally trained as a musician, she comes from at least 4 generations of designers and visual artists, so perhaps something like this was inevitable...

Thanks for stopping by PressingNeeds! I carve all my blocks from original drawings or photos, and i make all my prints by hand.

Saw a design you loved, but it isn't listed now? Convo me - for most designs, i'll be able to make another print just for you. Individual prints will have slight variations of course, as each one is made by hand.

My home/farm/studio is tobacco-free but full of critters. Not that you'll find pawprints on the artwork, but the occasional cat hair does get caught under the packing tape, no matter how hard i try...

Returns and exchanges
I hope that you're delighted with your purchase, but if there's any problem at all, please convo me so that i can sort it out!

Prints in original condition may be returned within a week of the time you receive the package - please contact me and mail them back to me, and when i receive them, i will refund your purchase price (but not shipping costs).
I accept PayPal payments, Etsy's direct checkout, or money orders. I have to collect sales tax for orders from Virginia.

If you are interested in an item, but need to find a place to put it/wait for the paycheck to arrive or the stars to align/figure out if Aunt Martha really WOULD like it for her birthday, feel free to convo me - i'm generally able to reserve items for you for up to a week. After that, i'll remove the reserve unless we've made other arrangements first.
All prints ship in protective archival sleeves, backed with cardboard to keep them safe from getting bent in the mail.

I generally ship by USPS first class mail (all U.S. orders will also have delivery confirmation); if you would prefer another method, please convo me first, and i'll be happy to get you the appropriate shipping rate for your location. I don't as a rule add insurance, but if you'd like to have your package insured, let me know, and i'll edit the shipping costs appropriately for you.
Additional policies and FAQs
Want a print that's framed and ready to hang? Just let me know via convo, and i'll be happy to work out all the details for you and create a custom listing.

Got something particular in mind? Different colors of inks, mats, or a different design altogether? I'm happy to do custom orders - while not every design will transfer well to a block print, let me know what you're thinking of - i'd be delighted to work with you to come up with something that's perfect for you!
