About

A stay-at-home mom with a creative itch that needs to be scratched!

I learned how to sew in junior high but always thought myself a bit slow at it. I never quite mastered following a pattern, and I was the last student in my ninth-grade sewing class to finish a quilt.

I didn't return to sewing (or really any kind of crafting) again until about a year after my oldest son was born. My grandma had given me her sewing machine as her eyesight was failing, and often asked how I was getting along with it. I made her a set of fabric coasters for Christmas and she was very impressed! Soon after I began experimenting with other tutorials and projects that I found on craft blogs.

"Pretty Lady Designs" started slowly. It began with a couple of appliqued shirts I made for my son, as well as a set of flannel burp cloths I made for a friend. Slowly but surely, more requests from friends and family came in...a nursing cover here, a pillowcase dress there. I also delved into simple jewelry making too.

When I decided to start a craft blog to document my projects, I knew I needed some kind of clever name. "Pretty Lady" is the only nickname my husband gave me that has stuck, so I went with that.

Crafting and sewing are truly therapy for me. I enjoy making things for others and I really don't think I'll ever stop doing it! :o)

"Pretty Lady Designs" was born about a year and a half after my oldest son was! He began taking long naps in the middle of the day and I found myself drawn to my grandma's old sewing machine once again.

Shipping
Everything I list in my Etsy shop (with the exception of items in the "Custom Shirts/Onesies" section) is ready to ship. Custom orders usually take 1-2 weeks to produce and ship.

Unless otherwise noted, I ship my items in large mailing envelopes at the first class (a.k.a. cheapest) rate. If you prefer that your item reaches you sooner or with confirmation or other add-on's, please alert me prior to purchasing and I will make you a custom listing reflecting the changes to shipping.

Right now I have shipping charges for the U.S. If you wish your item to be shipping to another country, convo me and we'll figure out the shipping cost!

I do my best to estimate shipping costs as accurately as possible. Please note that your shipping charge also includes handling charges as well. If you end up paying more for shipping when combining items in the same order, I can refund you the difference via Paypal.
Refunds and Exchanges
All of my items are handmade with love and careful attention; however, sometimes defective materials and/or mistakes happen. If you receive an imperfect item, please contact me. If your item cannot be fixed, I will happily refund your money and cover the return shipping. Due to prior experience, I prefer that you first ship the defective item back to me, and then I can issue you a full refund PLUS what you paid to ship the item back.

Need a size bigger or smaller? I do exchanges on all non-personalized shirts and onesies! All I ask is that you cover the shipping.

Unfortunately, I cannot offer returns or exchanges on personalized items. Thank you for understanding!
Additional policies and FAQs
Sending your item(s) as a gift? Let me know and I'll include a brief message from you for no additional charge. I will also be careful to leave out any receipts with the item's cost on it!

Did you order a custom appliqued shirt or onesie?
---All appliqued designs are affixed to the garment using the iron-on adhesive called Heat n Bond Lite. It provides a strong hold without being stiff. I then reinforce the design by sewing around the edges with coordinating thread.
---You may notice there is a thin white paper-like substance on the inside of the garment where the stitches are. That is simply a coffee filter that I iron out and pin to the inside of the shirt when I'm sewing the design onto the front. It helps to stabilize the fabric of the garment and to prevent stretching and pulling. When I complete a shirt, I gently tear out most of the filter but some of it usually remains. A few washes should soften and remove the rest of it, and in the meantime it shouldn't irritate your little one's skin since it's a very soft paper to begin with.
---CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Wash and dry inside-out. Some fraying is to be expected but it should be minimal, and adds to the rugged and "shabby-chic" look!

Did you order a vinyl bib?
---CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Wipe down with a wet rag and allow to dry with the pocket unsnapped (or else wipe down with a dry rag). DO NOT IRON as this will cause the vinyl covering to melt and could possibly ruin your iron as well as the bib. If the bib becomes really wrinkled and you really want to iron, place the bib between two sheets of parchment paper and use the "wool" (no steam) setting on your iron to press it. Make sure the iron is only coming into contact with the parchment paper at all times, and also make sure the ironing board is protected by the parchment paper.

Did you order a nursing cover?
---CARE INSTRUCTIONS: I would recommend you hand-wash the cover, or else use the gentle cycle on your washing machine. I'm afraid that anything more would disrupt the boning in the neckline of the cover and cause it to bend or warp. Line dry or hang flat to dry (I do not recommend putting it in the dryer).

Did you order a pillow slipcover?
---Pillow forms are not included with your purchase of the slipcover. This is to keep shipping charges at a minimum (much easier and cheaper to ship the cover rather than the entire pillow).
--All slipcovers are made with cotton duck or home decor-type fabric so they're very sturdy.
--CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Wash and machine dry unless other wise noted.
