About prettySpeigelmirrors

Speigel (Spiegel), my maiden name, means mirror in German

I started distressing mirrors in 2016 while searching for home decor. With a tight budget and big ideas, the decision was made to make the mirrors I fell in love with. To keep my pieces affordable and accessible for all budgets, I use salvaged and found mirrors. With a small stockpile of pieces, I had the opportunity to showcase my items in a super neat shop in downtown Annapolis.

Over time and extensive research, I have honed in on the techniques and styles that I love most. Distressing old mirrors was just the start, as I researched and practiced I have expanded my skill set and am self-taught in the ancient art of Verre Églomisé, gilding genuine metal leaf to the back side of the glass to make a mirror. Each vintage mirror is started by tarnishing the silver, hand painted and may include metal leaf, verre églomisé mirrors are first gilded with genuine metal leaf etched with the pattern or image of choice in the reverse, painted and put it all back together again. The outcome is a beautiful piece of functional art and a twist to an essential home decor item.

Custom orders and commissions are the majority of my creations, so please feel free to message me with your ideas and/photos! As each piece is truly its own, please visit my website to find merchants who carry pretty Speigel mirrors.

Custom Pricing

Custom projects are priced per square inch. You can expect a cost of anywhere from $.55 - $2.10 per square inch dependant on the materials required to create your mirror. When possible I will offer salvaged framing options to pass savings on to you. I am always happy to hear your ideas and quote accordingly.

Can you make a mirror for a frame I already have?

Absolutely! Start a conversation with the dimensions of the glass or mirror panel required. Together we can create the perfect mirror to compliment your piece. You may also send your frame to me for refinishing if desired.

I have a mirror, can you treat it?

Possibly. This all depends on the type of the mirror. The chemical process used to create the antique/distressed look works on silvered mirrors. Many newer mirrors made overseas are now aluminum and will not take to the process. You are welcome to send photos of your piece and I can help to determine whether or not the treatment will take.
