Why crochet? & why cakes?
I started crocheting in January 2014.
The reason I started crocheting was because I wanted a blanket for my bed. So I bought a hook & some yarn & got on youtube to find some tutorial videos. The first thing I made was a pillow (which now when I look at it I see so many things I could have done better). Before I started on this blanket I practiced making other things - hats, baby booties, granny squares. I even made two shawls! Soon I got into amigurumi.
For those not familiar with amigurumi it "is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll". Well thats what it says on wiki but most knitted/crocheted 3D items fall in this category.
So I learnt all about increasing, decreasing, magic rings, working in rounds & lots of other stuff & stitches & soon felt confident enough to write my own patterns.
Now back to the blanket...
I've always had weight issues & back in 2007 I lost 70lbs (whoop!) which I kept off for about 6 years. I was under a lot of stress & had anxiety problems & soon I'd gained 60lbs back (boo!). So August 2014 I'd had enough & wanted to lose the weight & gain back some confidence. So I did. It took 6 months but I did.
"Claire! What does this have to do with a blanket?"
Well I'll tell you...
When I started losing weight I started a blanket, just a simple stitch of a giant granny square. The last time I lost weight I felt the cold more so figured if I start the blanket now by the time the weights gone the blanket would be done plus it'll keep my hands too busy to snack. Bingo! 6 months & 30 balls of yarn later it was done.
This where the cakes come in.
I used to love baking & cake decorating but sadly it makes my waist expand. I'd also cut a lot of sugary & starchy foods out of my diet to lose & maintain my weight. I missed baking cakes but figured I could still make cakes...
I wanted to make my products with as much detail as possible so they truly look good enough to eat!
Hey presto! Pretty Sweet Crochet!
I've always been a creative little blighter... I love making things. I love the satisfaction it brings me. I work full time in retail so crochet has become my creative outlet.
