Speaking of "Home Sweet Home" ....

Ah, remember when ...?

You just never know what will turn up on "The Shelf."

A small selection from my personal library.
Essentially, I'm interested in sending vintage books and other memorabilia to new homes where they'll give many years of enjoyment.
In early 2009, when my wife Mollie suggested that some of the books I've collected over a long and varied career might bring joy to others, I opened Prospero's Bookshelf, which I named for the shipwrecked magician in Shakespeare's "The Tempest." This seemed fitting, as, after many years researching and teaching dramatic literature, I have acquired a large library of books on theatre and drama from all parts of the world.
My shop, which started as an effort to make room in our home for new collections, has grown over the years into an entirely new career for both of us. We now actively search for vintage memorabilia, curiosities, housewares, magazines, ephemera and, of course, used books on all kinds of subjects.
While a large number of the offerings in my shop are, and will be for some time, related to the performing arts, I also enjoy adding pieces of history from my home state of Maine - postcards, early 20th century snapshots and items of home decor - to "The Shelf."
The joy is as much in the hunting as in the discovering! And whenever I send a treasure on its way to a new home, I realize anew that I've always been a vintage person at heart.

All my life I've loved reading - literature, poetry, history, biography. A former teacher, I offer vintage books and memorabilia to those who share my love of Americana. And as a native Mainer, I enjoy adding a bit of "Down East" flavor to my shop.

When not at work in my own shops, I'm happiest playing "Gal Friday" to Joe's "Prospero." I've tried my hand at many things over the years, before coming home to my adopted state of Maine and learning to appreciate the beauty of old and simple things.

Your items are normally on their way in 1-3 business days after we receive your order.
International Orders: If your country isn't listed for an item, please contact us to discuss possibilities.

Vintage Condition
Please understand that our items are vintage, many of them quite old. Especially where previously owned books are concerned, there are frequently signs of wear - wobbly spines, discoloration and foxing, previous owners' names and/or bookplates, library markings, turned corners, faded covers. We check all our items carefully before listing them and do our best to describe their conditions accurately. If, after reading our description of an item, you have questions, please contact us before buying.
