When my boys were 18 months and 3 1/2 years I witnessed their extreme frustrations with Thomas, the toy they loved the most. They were on very different developmental stages and one was a track puller (and tosser) and the older was very mad that Thomas wouldn't stay on the track. He wanted to pull all the trains and that wasn't possible on the small 9" radius store bought track. Well after five major renovations of his train table we ended up with a 6 foot oval with almost 200 pieces of fastened track, 30 of which were customized to fit. There are three different levels and one solo track on the outside edge. Now three years later that table is still getting almost daily use. The boys now set up track and reconfigure the layout to pull absolutely all the trains which is their goal. This can be seen on http// . My goal was to find a way for different aged children to play developmentally appropriately on the same table. It works. It faciliatates play and imagination beyond my wildest dreams. They share, they interact to be the most usefull engine, and battery operated engines stay on!
