A very warm welcome to Purls of Colour, Belfast, my shop of unusual, one of a kind colourful handknitted accessories, designed to stand out!
My designs are colourful, bohemian, experimental, vibrant, full-on, playful, upbeat, high-spirited and full of life.
If you wear a Purls of Colour item, you signal that you are fighting against the lure of the mundane and same old. You want to live life to the full, and don’t want to see your years slipping by in a comfortable but boring routine.
Each item I knit for the Purls of Colour label is a one-off and handmade to last. It is made for those who love dancing in the rain and never give up. For dreamers, who won't grow up. For adventurers who throw on some vivacious knitwear and keep moving.
I carefully select the yarn I am using, and almost always use 100% natural fibre.

This pretty scarf is even better than expected. The photos don't do it justice, and don't tell you how beautifully soft the wool is. It's soooooo soft and light and airy. Very well made and it arrived in no time at all. I love it!!! Thanks so much Purls! You're the best!

About

There has always been knitting...

Since the age of 8, knitting has been a part of my life. From wearing oversized handknitted jumpers and long hats with bells on it as a teenager, to knitting chunky Aran jumpers to keep me warm in cold student houses, through to starting my own label Purls of Colour and now sitting in political meetings, there has always been knitting somewhere.

If I haven’t got my knitting with me, I feel I miss something. When I travel, my knitting bag takes up most of my luggage, and if I find a yarn shop on my journey, I add more to my ever increasing yarn stash.

I love working with natural fibre and vibrant colours, and when I can, I buy from local or Etsy sellers. I also spin my own yarn mostly on Turkish drop spindles, which I love for their balance and sturdiness. When working on a piece, I find it hard to stick to one colour only, although I can do shades, such as different shades of red.

My colourful knitwear is designed to add brightness and a sense of adventure to life, especially during the dark winter months, when you need warmth but also colour. There is nothing like snuggling into a big handknitted wrap or keeping your hands warm in a pair of vibrant soft mittens, which are one-of-a-kind – just like you.

I knit pretty much everywhere, but I have two favourite places in Belfast: the comfy armchair in Studio Souk in Castle Lane, where I also sell my knitwear, and my garden. The bright colours of nature inspire me.

Designing, knitting and selling my knitwear and seeing somebody wearing a Purls of Colour piece gives me a kick. I love being in the creative flow when I am knitting, and I can forget time and place.

However, when I knit in meetings, I am very alert, in fact, knitting helps me keeping my focus while the hands are busy. As a political knitter, I have been nicknamed Madame Guillotine or Madame Defarge , especially when I start ranting and throwing the knitting on the table. Here comes trouble...

It is important for creatives to get involved in politics. Anybody working in the arts or crafts knows how hard it is to make a living, and how often government cuts hit the arts and creative businesses first. We also know how difficult it is to put a price on creative work, and how for instance, handknitters have to justify their prices all the time, because they are measured against cheap machine-knit imports. So it is important to get your voice heard.

So I take my knitting and go to the next meeting, working for change. And before you ask, yes, I am Labour and proud.

Additional policies and FAQs
I welcome custom orders. Special time-frame needs can usually be met, but do allow plenty of time in case I need to order yarn. Please contact me, and I shall give you a quote on cost and a delivery time estimate. Specially commissioned pieces are not subject to the returns policy.

Note about colours and the look of handmade items:

Although I take great care in ensuring that the colours in the photographs look just like the colours of the item, slight variations can occur. I try to show the item in different light settings, but how colours are seen is also dependent on the settings of your computer screen. I try to describe the colours as accurately as possible.

Also unevenness of stitches is a sign that the item is handmade. I am a very even knitter, but the odd uneven stitch can happen, especially when decreasing or changing colours, or when knitting with thick and thin handspun yarn or ribbon.
