About

Pycnocline: A rapid change in water density, often due to a change in salinity

My husband Matt and I dreamed up the concept of this shop for about a year and a half. We are very passionate about aquatic biology and love everything that pertains to the water world. We have worked in aquatic/ marine science for over 10 years. I am currently a stay at home mom and am working hard to pass our love for science and our faith to the next generation. I also get a lot of enjoyment from dabbling in art and design, particularly with nature as my inspiration. Transferring my designs to shirts via bleach is such a fun and rewarding process and I wanted to share it with everyone!

Matt came up with the name for the shop back when we first started planning it. A pycnocline is a rapid change in water density, often caused by a change in salinity. Fresh and salt water coming together: duality. Being scientific and religious also offers ourselves and our shop a similar sense of duality.

I hope you enjoy the items we offer! Feel free to send me a message if there's anything special you are looking for.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

Yes! We can do special requests, such as plus sizes and different colors. However, we have only tested our bleach dyeing process on 100% cotton shirts in a few different colors. We cannot guarantee the result will be the same on all colors or a synthetic blend. Price may need to be adjusted for special requests. Please message us if you are interested. All towels are hand dyed and are currently only offered in the one size and color.

Sizing details

Sizing charts are included with each listing please look at the sizing charts carefully before ordering.

Care instructions

Each shirt or towel is thoroughly rinsed and line dried before shipping to remove excess bleach. I recommend washing in cool water with like colors and drying in the dryer on medium heat. You can also iron at medium heat with a steam setting if needed.

Why is the processing time so long?

Each shirt or towel is made to order. I typically have all sizes listed in stock, but need to bleach, rinse, and dry each shirt or towel individually. If the shirt or towel does not pass my quality control inspection, I need time to repeat the process before shipping.

I don't like the way my shirt looks or fits. Can I return or exchange it?

I urge you to carefully look at the size charts before ordering. I offer unisex size shirts in a common brand so that the sizing is more predictable.
Also keep in mind that I bleach these shirts individually. Each bleaching process is a bit different, like a painting. I use a template, but the way the bleach sprays or is "painted" on, processing time, and even lighting conditions all play a role in the end product. I also carefully inspect each shirt before shipping for quality control. If I'm unhappy with the result, I do it again.
If you are unhappy with your shirt in any way, please message me so we can come up with an exchange or return plan.

Do you offer women's cuts/ more colors/ synthetic blend shirts/ sweatshirts/ etc.?

At this time, I only offer 100% cotton t-shirts in black or blue. In the future I would like to offer more choices. Currently I cannot invest the money in keeping additional colors or cuts in stock in all sizes. I do accept special requests, but they may require an additional fee. Please message me if you have a request.

Do you do custom designs?

The design process is currently the most time consuming part of the whole process. While I am not open to starting a custom design from scratch for a single order, I am open to hearing from my customers to know what you'd like to see in the shop. Please send me a message or connect with me on social media (@pycnocline on FB and IG) and let me know what you'd like to see!

Lost or damaged packages

I ship packages via USPS First Class or Priority and provide a tracking number for each order. Once your package is delivered to USPS I have no control over what happens to it. If you feel that the package is lost or it arrives damaged, please contact your local Post Office as soon as possible. I cannot issue a refund or replacement for lost, stolen, or damaged items once they are in the care of USPS. Please contact me if you have issues, and I will help you troubleshoot a solution.
