About

Charting New Territory with the Old: A Letterpress Story

We began Quail Lane Press began in 2009 with a small tabletop press in the laundry room of our cabin. Today, all QLP designs are conceived and designed by me, Michelle, and printed by my husband Charles on our Vandercook letterpress in our workshop in Milwaukie, a charming town just south of Portland Oregon.

Developed by Johannes Gutenberg way back in the 15th century, the process of letterpress printing consists of several stages: creating a relief plate of an image or composing old type to form an image, stationing the plate on the bed of the press to print in the right place on the paper, inking up the press, and printing. It is a labor of love.

We make all things letterpress but specialize in typographic posters, linocuts, and hand drawn maps. We are what you call map geeks… And proud of it. Maps remind us of the places that are special in our life or places that we have dreams to go to one day. And we think they elicit the same response in a lot of other people. Our maps show an undeveloped landscape…there are no highways or cities only familiar natural landmarks like rivers and coastlines.

We also tend to make maps of very specific areas. We have a few state and country maps but what we really enjoy is finding these smaller areas that are special to people. So far we have mapped around 40 places in the US and abroad and are doing our best to get to the many requests that people have made for new places.

We recently began a new line of colorful prints focusing on the animal kingdom. After welcoming our first child into the world and seeing his inherent fascination with animals, it renewed our own interest in animals. So many of us have a favorite animal (or dare we say, a power animal) and we think these prints make great pieces for anywhere from the nursery to the office!

F.A.Q.
Do you take commissions of custom maps?

Presently we take requests for places (and want to get to them all!). We take every request into consideration and I rank each place depending on how many people have requested that place, and how salable it might be. Because each map takes a great deal of time to draw and costs around $200 in materials to make, We are making our way through the list pretty slowly. If you are interested in buying a whole edition of a map (or a completely custom map for only you) let us know and we can discuss pricing further.

Can you change the size or color of the one of the maps you currently have in stock?

In contrast to digitally made prints, letterpress printing involves using custom made relief plates or hand set type (carefully situated on the bed of the press), hand mixing and application of ink, and feeding each piece of paper through the machine one at a time. Thus, changing size and color is a big process. Because we are trying to create as many new pieces as we can, and we have a limited amount of time to do so, we can no longer accomodate these requests.

Shipping is kind of expensive, why?

In order to prevent any harm by angry postal workers (or machines) coming to your print, we package each print in a waterproof cello sleeve, nestled between two pieces of cardboard then placed in a large flat mailer. We've found this technique pretty fool proof but it does make the packages pretty heavy, which results in the price of shipping.

Do you allow the use of your images for other reproductions?

We welcome any shout-outs in your blog or publication and in fact will gladly send you hi res images to use for your feature. But as far as the use of any of our works for reproduction goes, the answer is generally no, as the majority of our pieces are limited editions. But contact me if you have questions. All of our work is protected by U.S. copyright laws.
