About QuillandCopper

Sales 700
On Etsy since 2012

Quill and Copper is my love for writing calligraphy on both paper and metal.

My shop evolved from helping my husband personalize copper signs in his Etsy shop, natureartstudio. We discovered a way to use markers on metal and fuse them permanently, and he asked if I could do the custom requests in calligraphy. That was several years before I opened my shop.

At the same time, I was doing pen and ink calligraphy and had the idea that it would be fun to capture some of our favorite recipes in a more permanent way to hand down to our three boys. We've lost so many family members that I find I cherish memories of what they used to bake, and that's part of a history and a way to keep them near.

And so I began to create favorite recipes in calligraphy and added watercolor to enhance the black and white. I framed them and keep them at hand to use, which I found not only very helpful, but a nice way to add art to the kitchen. The recipes I choose to do in calligraphy are time-tested and absolutely wonderful. As I have stated elsewhere in my shop, I have made them so many times I cannot count.

As I created more recipes, I took the step to open up my own shop offering calligraphy recipes as kitchen art and the metal signs that I do in conjunction with my husband. We enjoy working together on the metal projects, and I love doing the recipes, always having more and more I want to create.

Welcome to my shop Quill & Copper!

My original calligraphy artwork is produced on 11" X 14" paper using two pens, with C-4 and C-5 nibs, and Pelikan ink. Each letter, each word, each illustration is hand-done. I write using the Uncial, Italic, Roman Serif, and Swash Italic alphabets, and create watercolor illustrations often depicting the food in each calligraphy recipe. I have combined my love of calligraphy and baking, choosing recipes that are loved and made time and again.

The originals are scanned and then resized to make the 8 X 10 and 5 X 7 prints and the 5 X 7 greeting cards, both of which are ready for framing.

The copper part of my shop is a combined effort with my husband, Mark, who creates the copper signs and then I embellish with calligraphy. Making a copper sign involves cutting a shape from a copper sheet, writing the calligraphy word(s), shaping, flaming, applying patina, and then applying an acrylic adhesive so the sign can be hung outside or inside. Each sign made is one-of-a-kind.
