FreeSpiritSewing is taking a short break

Note from shop owner Hello and thanks for visiting!

I'm extending the break for Free Spirit Sewing while I finish up orders.

The past year has brought some great new opportunities to really stretch my skills and creativity! But making bespoke dresses lead to neglecting this Etsy shop. I need some time to reorganize how I work and spruce things up a bit.

Message me via email if you would like to contact me directly: barbara [!at] freespiritsewing.net

Wishing you well!

My Story

I think I'll treat this as a running notes and activities journal:

May 2021
I have interesting news that I think I'll just drop here!
I read often about the human and environmental abuses going on in the fabric industry and I try to buy from good humans. Researching the actual source is really difficult. You can only get so far with searches, calls, and emails. The answers are not usually enlightening at all.
My silk supplier is a cool guy. Adam from Silk Baron. He calls me up when something might be low or out when I order. We chat a little. The last time I asked him what he knows about his supplier.
He delighted me. :)
He knows his supplier well. They know each other's families, even. He said he has a contract in place that covers human rights, wages, child labor, etc. at the factory where weaving is done *and* the farms where the silk yarns come from! And, he assured me that they are weaving with 100% silk as well. No polyester is used. The contract is broken if they break the promise.
So, I can vouch for the silk right now on the level of fair trade.
www.silkbaron.com is the site.
And, I do still save all the little bits plus recycling where I can. Wait until you see what's coming! Think patchwork, gypsy, sophisticated, sacred geometry, chakras... and Lilith.

Who I am.
I'm Barbara and I own and operate FSSS all on my own from design concept to shipping it out. I'm a mom of adult kids now but all of this started when they were in school. I grew as they grew. Only my baby 20 yo is still home. He's a creative woodworker with mad skills and ideas plus an outside job. My daughter is a fantastic painter, a musical saw player in a popular band, and has an outside job as well. I couldn't be more proud! They are following their dreams while getting the bills paid. Boom!

I've dabbled a lot in painting, hand sewing, embroidery, costume making, quilt making, wood working, jewelry making, recycling and upcycling. It took a while to get focused to this area I landed in. I love that I get to use so many different skills. And that I keep learning more. I spent the last 2 years really learning how to make patterns and design clothes. I took online classes in addition to a lot of hands on practice.
My goal is to design for real bodies with attention to the problems that come up in fit. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. You'll be seeing a lot of different kinds of ideas coming at you. Stay tuned!

I have been working out of my home studio and running an online shop since 2008. I offer classes and workshops to guide DIYers in projects and teach unique skills. During the warmer months I hit the road and attend music festivals where my shop comes to life in 200 square feet for about 3 days at a time.

I believe so strongly that the Universe conspires to put opportunities in our paths that we most deeply feel and pursue. I have been very fortunate to recognize and take full advantage of this. I live my dream with passion and belief. I'm grateful for people like you who love my creations. Your purchase feeds that energy and provides me the means to live this humble seamstress life.

Thank you!
