Cabinet of Curiosities

I've always loved to sew and create little worlds out of leftover and found materials. But I started making dolls and toys when my children were babies. I didn't have money for Halloween costumes and always made what they requested: mermaid, bumble bee, praying mantis, pumpkin head.

Reading science fiction, particularly steampunk and urban fantasy, is my cozy place. It helps remind me that the world is not quite as solid as it seems to be. That all that appears can shift in a split second.

And so I make new things out of old things, like a god, like time.

Making soft, cuddly stuffed woolen dolls is so much fun. The wool stuffing is warm and comforting. I sell those at www.sweaterdoll.etsy.com.

The weird ones come to Rabbithorns.

Hello! So glad you came by. Making small things out of old discarded materials reminds me how readily we dispose of things and people and how much pain that causes. Making new things out of old things is one way I practice looking for value and meaning in even the oddest places. Sometimes forgotten places.

All of these dolls begin with the same basic structure and are more or less embellished to let each personality shine through. Some are more suited to older children or adults due to the type of embellishment, so please keep this in mind when shopping for a young child.

It takes 2-4 hours to create and hand stitch a SweaterDoll (available at www.sweaterdoll.etsy.com). Specialty dolls, like the steampunk dolls, may take 2 days to sew, assemble, and finish. The dolls are made of repurposed materials in a smoke-free home and filled with clean Australian wool fleece. Although I attempt to use natural materials, some fabircs are blends. All fiber types involved will be noted in the product description.

Thanks for stopping by and supporting handmade!

Accepted payment methods

  • Pay with Visa
  • Pay with Master Card
  • Pay with American Express
  • Pay with Discover
  • Pay with PayPal
Payments may be made by Paypal or bank transfer (within Australia).

If you would like to pay by money order or international money order, we can arrange that but it will take longer for you to receive your doll. I can accept money orders in AUD and USD.

All payments should be finalized within 3 days of choosing your item(s).
Orders will be shipped within one week of being purchased.

I try to use reused and plastic-free packaging. If you want your doll wrapped in plastic before being boxed, please let me know.

Packages are shipped in Australia with tracking. Postage will show as around $7 on the package itself, but there is an extra fee for tracking.

Most overseas shipping costs around $15. Sometimes it's $17.50; sometimes it's $13.70. To make things easier for us all, I have simply set the costs at $15 for international shipping.

I do not purchase insurance or tracking for international shipping. If you would like to pay for this, please convo me before you purchase and I will add it to the shipping in the listing.
Refunds and Exchanges
I take care in describing my items as clearly as possible and in packaging them so they arrive to you safely. If something goes wrong with within 7 days of receiving your doll, please convo me. I will not refund for products ripped apart by your pets or pulled apart by rambunctious toddlers. They are so well stitched I would find it hard to believe they can be so easily pulled apart. (I have tried it myself with several test dolls just to see.)

But things do happen and stitching threads can break so I am happy to hear from you if you are not satisfied with the construction of your doll. If the doll you have purchased is faulty, I will refund the full cost.

Please note, colors do not always appear in photos as they do to the eye. I try to choose the photos that most accurately represent the doll's true colors on my computer.
Additional policies and FAQs
While the wool fleece stuffing is clean and new, the dolls themselves are made from upcycled materials and sometimes vintage pieces and buttons. I only purchase clean materials and clean them again in scent-free natural soaps. The dried beans used to weight the dolls are new and clean.
