Breaking Things on Purpose
It all started during an "art girl day" with my dear friend and fellow artist, Jessica. Neither of us had ever made a mosaic before, but decided to give it a try. Who knew that afternoon would be such a catalyst in my life. I never knew that breaking things on purpose would be so much fun. From that day forward, mosaic art became part of me. I discovered that mosaic work is meditative and healing. I began to look at things differently. Each time I saw a plate, I would envision how the pattern would look shattered.
Our next "art girl day" was spent experimenting with polymer clay. A way to be able to make my own tiles without a kiln? I was hooked. That day Jessica made me a crow pendant out of polymer clay. All I made was a mess. The pendant she made for me inspired me to keep going. I spent the next few months making polymer clay pendants. I enjoyed it, but deep down felt that making jewelry wasn't what I was supposed to do. I needed to explore...
Creating mosaic art reminds me of my life. Some pieces are pretty and their beauty is apparent even when they stand alone. Some pieces are plain and may be overlooked as important until they are placed just right, becoming vital to the beauty of the whole. And sometimes you have to break things on purpose so you can pick up the shattered remains and create something better. While I am creating, I feel at peace and it is the only time that I feel like things make sense.
My shop name originated from my middle name, Rae and my initials CRW. Proudly wearing the crow pendant, my transformation into Rae Crow began and my shop was born.
All of my ideas just pop in my head. I see the finished product as a quick image in my mind, then magically stumble across the items needed to create it. The premonition of the finished piece always comes before finding the perfect item in a second hand shop that I need.
My dream is to be a gypsy and travel, while making a living by being me. I am working towards that each day. I dream of being able to go where my soul is called and find the perfect treasure needed for my next piece of artwork. I would love to have a gypsy wagon/traveling art studio. I spend hours looking at photos of renovated campers and dream of one day taking on that project. Gypsy dreams.....
