A lifelong love of textiles and a passion for diversity

As far back as I can remember, I have loved textiles and creating my own unique designs. I studied textile design, and have sewn, drawn, painted and written my way through life ever since. But most of all I love that we are all different, but we all fit together, like the colours of the rainbow.

So what is RainbowShed all about? What’s with all the rainbows?

Rainbows make me smile. Rainbows need no words - every culture in the world has stories and legends about rainbows. Rainbows are a promise of renewal and hope for the future, and of of many diverse elements making up a unified whole.

In more recent history, rainbows have been used in the flags of both the International Co-operative movement from 1925, symbolising unity in diversity and the power of light, enlightenment and progress, and later on to celebrate Gay Pride, designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, symbolising sexuality, life, healing, sunlight, nature, art & magic, serenity & harmony, and spirit.

I have had strong ties with the Co-operative movement for many years, and have long supported the right of all people to be free to enjoy life unfettered by prejudice and discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or culture.

RainbowShed marries this mix of creativity and personal philosophy with my belief that in the words of William Morris, of the late 19th Century Arts & Crafts movement, you should "...have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” and again as Morris wrote “...I do not want art for a few; any more than education for a few; or freedom for a few...”

RainbowShed is my way of creating a bit of colour, optimism, and joy, and a celebration of the individuality and diversity of people that make up the world. One of my aims in life is to change the world for the better, one small bit at a time.

RainbowShed’s virtual home is on Etsy, where I sell my custom made clothes and accessories, and on www.RainbowShed.com where I blog about my experiences starting and running my business.

Offline, RainbowShed's home is in my shed, at the bottom of my garden. This is where I design and cut patterns, cut and sew fabric into a range of beautiful and useful accessories, and pack orders, ready to cycle down the long hill to the Post Office.

RainbowShed is my own space, a place where dreams are born and made real, my space to work in, and the studio where I create my range of accessories that I hope will bring some positivity and delight to you.

I take immense pride in creating items of beauty and utility that help you express your identity and celebrate diversity. Each item is hand-made to order for you.

I am always happy to discuss your requirements, and work with you to design and hand make something unique for you.

I am also busy working on my other Etsy shop, https://www.etsy.com/shop/mementomortua where you will find hand crafted items themed around The Day of the Dead, the Mexican Celebration of Dia de los Muertos, which honours and celebrates the dead.

I custom make many of my items myself, to your requirements, so from placing your order it can take up to 30 days for you to receive your goods, but if ready to ship I can ship within 1-2 business days of placing your order.

I will often fulfill orders much quicker than this, generally within a week from order to dispatch, but if you have a deadline, please convo me so that we can come to an agreement about timescales.

I use the Royal Mail for all parcels, and use a signed for service wherever possible.
Additional policies and FAQs
I am happy to discuss custom orders and requests for items that are not listed - please convo me with your requirements and I will be happy to see if I am able to meet your needs.

At the moment I am not accepting wholesale orders as my focus is on custom made items tailored to individual customer needs.

All my items are made of 100% polyester Anti-Pill Polar Fleece, sewn with 100% polyester thread. I only use high quality materials to make my accessories, and make my products to a high standard, both machine stitching using my domestic sewing machines, and hand stitching where appropriate.

Care Instructions: wash either by hand or machine on a cool wash. Air dry, or tumble dry on a cool setting. Do not iron, as polyester fleece may melt if ironed, and will not need ironing as it seldom holds creases.
