Rapscallion Rose's, Soul of the Rose Millinery Designs are all custom designed, hand dyed and hand blocked. We make every hat, one luscious millinery creation at a time. You wont be purchasing a dusty hat sitting on a shelf, which was stamped out by the thousands, in a factory overseas.
We use old world craftmanship and millinery techniques in our hats, creating each one with artistry, creativity, skill and most of all love.

Because our hats are created one at a time, as we recieve orders, this allows us to make design changes, such as different colors of straw or fur felt bases, different fabric colors, interchanging one brim or crown to go with another, creating a design shown in parasisol straw in velour fur felt for winter, and even creating a one of a kind custom design if you are interested or in need of a new hat to match a particular outfit. Please feel free to email Rapscallion Rose with any design changes you are interested in, and I will get back to you with price and possibility.

I dye my own straw so I can offer many color possibilities.
Velour fur felts are available in black, winter white, cinnamon brown, chocolate brown, deep forest green, burgundy, red, purple, lavender, royal blue, silver grey, old rose, light pink, light blue, bordeaux, and apricot.

Hat Styles and Custom Orders:

Please choose from the styles listed on our web site, or email us for requests for variations of current styles, different trims or hat colors. Hats shown are samples of our current hat line. We have made many variations of our hats by mixing and matching various crown and brim styles, as well as embellishments ,hat bands and design elements. If you would like a different straw color for your hat, other than the one in the photograph on our site, please email us with your request. We will let you know if the straw color you would like is available and what fabric color choices are available to go with it. We are happy to receive custom requests, and will let you know if we are able to create them, as well as a price quote for your custom designed hat. If you have photos of your ideas, or can choose a mixing and matching of my current styles, that is helpful. There is an additional custom design fee per custom hat ordered. We are happy to provide an estimate prior to creating your design. All designs, once created become the sole property of Soul of the Rose Millinery Designs.

If you are interested in a custom design request, please email us the specifics and we will email you a price estimate. All custom millinery orders will be billed in advance of their creation via a PayPal email invoice.

Hat Sizing:
Careful measuring to determine your hat size is essential to guarantee a good fit. Your correct head size is the measurement of where your hat will rest on your head. Using a flexible cloth tape measure, such as those used by seamstresses, measure the exact circumference of your head, placing the tape measure about a half an inch above your eyebrows, across the top of your ear, and being certain it lies midway on your occipital bone, ( that little bump at the back of your head). Don't pull the tape too tightly or you will end up with a hat that fits too tight. Remember your hat should fit snug but also comfortably on your head. If you do not have a measuring tape available, you can use a piece of string, and then once you have determined your head size, lay the string on a yard stick to get the measurement in inches. The average size of most women's hats is 21 to 23 ½”. Most hats can be made in sizes ranging from 21 to 24 inches. All of our Soul of the Rose hats are made to, and come with an adjustable head size ribbon inside, which allows them to fit a broad range of head sizes. The adjustable head size ribbon also allows you to wear your hat in a number of different ways, either straight on your head or angled to one side. To better assist you in finding and wearing the perfect hat, we have created provided a few pages that should help you to find the right one.

What to Expect with a custom designed hat:
with a Custom Designed, Hand Blocked Hat

* Do expect all hats to be hand dyed, hand blocked, and hand stitched, as well as exquisite design and artistry, a professional , quality hat, but not with a home made look to it.
* Due to each hat being custom made, one hat at a time, please understand that you may see slight dye or color variations, as well as a slightly different shape with hand blocking, if you were to order more than one hat.
* Do expect artistic license and variation in design and embellishments, as no two hats are exactly alike, especially those that require any hand shaping of brims or specialty crowns.
* From time to time we may substitute trims, ribbons or embellishments and design elements.

Choosing Your Hat:
Choosing the right hat is all about balance, accentuating your best features, adding a splash of color and lifting your spirits. Choose a hat that is flattering on you and makes you feelspecial, beautiful, mysterious, playful, fun. Choose one that matches your lifestyle, wardrobe and body shape. For example, a tall slender woman would prefer a hat that has more width, rather than additional height, which would tend to make her appear taller.
A smaller face would be enhanced by a smaller angled, perched or cocktail hat, or a hat with a smaller overall proportion with respect to shape and brim size, rather than a large hat that might tend to drown your beautiful facial features. A wider face would be better with a more narrow brim, and a thin face with a larger brim. A round face will look be best complimented by a hat with a square shaped or asymmetrical brim , or one worn at an angle.

Choose colours that suit your complexion. If you are wearing a dark colour and want to brighten it up, you can enhance the hat / headpiece with tints of your accessory colour. Choosing a hat the same colour as your outfit is totally a personal choice, but do remember that a mix of colours can add interest to the overall look. When you are feeling that extra bit of confidence, bold contrast may work wonders. However if you are feeling only a little adventurous a subtle blend of colours may be just enough.

Please remember that there are no strict or formal rules to hat wearing. The important things are comfort, choosing a color that enhances your complexion or your outfit, adds something special to your splendid appearance, and one that allows you smile, laugh, exude an aura of confidence and have fun.

How To Wear Your New Hat:
The angle that a hat is worn at can completely change the look of the hat. Many of the hats on our site can be worn in various ways, back to front, sideways, tilted, angled. Most women’s hats should be placed straight on the head or angled to the side, never on the back of the head, as it will create a "little school girl" appearance. Some forties styles or cocktail hats may be the exception to this rule.

Hat Storage:
Never lay a hat flat on a table top, as it will ruin the shape of the brim. Do not hang them on a hat peg, as it will cause unsightly creases or bulges in the crown, especially with straw hats. The best way to store a hat is to stuff the crown with tissue paper and store in a well sized hat box. Storing your hats in a hat box will keep them free from dust, weather, and undesirable mishaps. It will also help your hat to retain its original shape. You may also store on a proper hat stand which allows the brim to remain horizontal. We do not presently sell hat boxes, but recommend the following sites where you may purchase them.
