We love making the old new again
We don't look at problems, we look for solutions.
The Micro-Shop is a phrase that I started using to jokingly refer to the spare bedroom in our apartment where I kept all of my projects separate from the rest of the tiny flat. I have worked in small craft capacities for decades as a hobby and was recently presented with an entire set of table top tools by my wife Red that she intended for me to step up my creativity. I was at first reluctant to work with power tools in a two bedroom apartment for anything other than the barest of projects.
That is until I was fired from my last job. At around the 30 day mark I still hadn't found any employment that I could agree with doing full time and Red sat me down for some Tequila to ask me why I wasn't just using my art to make money. Being an artist I was full of excuses like it's hard to get traction and there are already so many good artists out there. Her response was to encourage me to give it a shot. The Marine in me decided that I wasn't going to let this opportunity slip away. I became determined to make this my life. Our life.
Ever since that day Red has made comments time and again about how much happier I am as a person now that I am working towards my own dreams. Lets face it. A hobby is just a job that you are willingly paying to work at. Why not make your hobbies work for you?
I genuinely feel an emotional connection to anyone who takes joy from my work and this above all else is the driving factor for why I create new things. To share joy.
I have been working in an artistic capacity for my entire life in everything from photography to woodworking, animation to home construction. I thrive when presented with a challenge and constantly aspire to be like the Master Craftsmen of old.
Red is the best business partner that I have ever worked with in terms of motivation and encouragement. Her ideas and contributions are an essential part of the success of Designs By Dai.
