Reclaiming materials, Reclaiming design.

Studio, Artist, and Designer

Hi. I'm Wendy, and I have recently set up Reclaim Design Studio in St. John's NL as a design and craft studio. I am an interior designer by trade, and an artist by heart. I went to art school in Toronto (OCADu) to study Environmental Design, which was really a broad way to study art in the context of buildings and the city. Then I thought I might try to use architecture and construction to save the world, so I went on to study towards a Masters in Environmental Design in Calgary, with a mixture of architecture courses and international development. Part way through that, the most glorious life-changing event happened ... I had a baby boy ... and suddenly volunteering all of my time and travelling the world didn't seem like priorities, or really a good idea at all.

Reclaimed Materials

I am also a collector of all things re-usable and overlooked! There is so much good in the waste that goes to landfill, and so many creative and beautiful ways this waste can be used. I have salvaged cedar off-cuts to create a mountain landscape scene deck out of lengths that were otherwise too short for decking; I create quilts, pillows and landscape art from upcycled fabric samples; I have built and designed modern kitchens from re-purposed cabinetry. Most recently I received a grant from the local waste management board to divert tile waste through a collection and storage system for discard tiles to create mosaic art and sell as mosaic supply.

Family

But at the end of the day, I am a mom of two amazing little people who I am raising, with my partner, to create and grow on our little homestead on the outskirts of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. We grow food, raise hens for eggs, cultivate fruit trees and shrubs, and live as much off land as this rocky island will allow!

Thank you for visiting my online shop! Everything I make is at least partially created from reclaimed, re-purposed, or upcycled materials. My current projects incorporate upcycled tiles into contemporary and landscape tile mosaics. Framed mosaic art can be purchased from my shop, but I am also very excited to do custom mosaic art projects and can provide a mesh-mounted design that can be installed directly to your walls or floors.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss a potential commission or custom order, please feel free to contact me via Etsy "conversations" or through email at wendyreidfairhurst [!at] gmail.com.

Additional policies and FAQs
I love custom work!!!

Generally, custom orders take 1 to 2 weeks to complete concept design, which includes regular communication as you are integral to the design process. Factors affecting the length of concept design is the speed with replying to communication / questions, and how quickly we are able to come up with the perfect design. After we have finalized the design, fabrication of the mosaic generally takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on the complexity of the design and the size of the project.

I generally split a custom order into two listings. The concept design listing which will result in a final digital package that I will use to inform the fabrication of the mesh-mounted mosaic art. You can also take these files to a local mosaic artist / installer if this makes more sense for your situation. The second listing will be for the mesh-mounted mosaic wall art fabrication and delivery. You will need additional installation labour to install the mosaic at its final destination. This listing includes shipping.
