Crochet Rainbow Mandala Blanket - 48" Diameter - It's FINALLY listed!!! :D

Welcome! Grab a cup of coffee or tea and learn more about Alicia and RecycledSerendipity...

Crochet, to me, has so many of the artistic characteristics that I am drawn toward. The different colors, fibers, and thickness of the yarns available make for infinite possibilities! You can crochet nearly anything - plastic, hair, thick paper… if it can be made to be long and string-like, it can be used to create a crocheted masterpiece. The forms that you can create with crochet are plentiful, too ~ Flat, textured, and even 3D sculpted pieces. You can hang it on a wall, wear it, cover a tree with it, and make innumerable useful objects! I always joke that, should I survive The Apocalypse, all I'll need is a stick to carve into a hook and I'll be set.

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 7 years old. I have a sneaking suspicion that she did it so I’d stop bothering her when she was working on her own knitting projects. ;) I didn’t “discover” crochet until after my middle son was born, over 7 years ago. I was frustrated just staring at the TV or reading a book for hours while nursing him. Unfortunately, knitting needles were just too long and pointy to have around a wiggly infant and writing and drawing were impossible. So, I bought a hook and taught myself to crochet from a small “crochet basics” sheet hanging among all of the free pattern sheets at the craft store. I’ve been in love ever since!

I don't limit my creativity to yarn and hook! I love creating all kinds of things from a plethora of materials. I get lost in dollar stores, hardware stores, thrift stores, any store with a clearance section, and (of course) craft stores. It is rare to find anything in my trash can that could possibly, someday, be turned into art. I probably have more toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, jars, old sheets, and plastic grocery bags tucked into cupboards and boxes than is considered mentally sane!

I am currently getting back to my first loves - drawing and painting - after nearly 20 years of putting my supplies away. My children are old enough that I can find a solid hour or two to work on new pieces, so I'm getting back into the saddle. Soon, I hope to have a shop section of pen & ink drawings and watercolor paintings to share with the world!

I’m a mom to 3 kids (4, if you count my husband!) I live in SE Michigan, USA. My children are 3, 7, and 18 years old. My oldest son is taking a break from school and working at his first real job. He is also expanding his knowledge in computer animation, exploring writing, and developing his drawing skills in his free time. My middle son attends an online public charter school from home. He was recently tested and was moved from 1st to 3rd grade! I love being at his side when those "AhA! moments occur. My "surprise baby" is my 3 year old daughter. She is an amazing little one who loves everything glittery and pink and is just as, if not more, creative than I am.
My husband is my "4th kid". He has some chronic medical issues and mental problems that make it impossible for me to work outside the home. Having Etsy available to sell the pieces that I create at home has been a blessing! Rather than sitting at home, doing nothing more than watching TV and playing on the computer, I can exercise my creative muscles and share them with the public.

*From time to time, you will find RecycledSerendipity has a "Handmade by Kids" section. My 7 year-old son and 3 year-old daughter contribute to this section. The item descriptions outline exactly what each has done to contribute to their projects, where their profits will go (they choose a charity to donate 10%), and my son writes a brief description in his own words about the piece. You can learn more about these "child artists" in the Shop Members section.

I have had a rather... interesting life. I've gone from doing well to being homeless and everything inbetween. I was this |-| close to completing my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Counseling with a focus on Art Education and Therapy when my husband fell ill. He has chronic physical and mental conditions that require me to stay home. So, rather than fret over this, I chose to look at it as an advantage. It is a wonderful outlet for frustrations and calming to my mind.

I love creating! Whether it's writing, crocheting, drawing, painting, sculpting... it doesn't matter what the medium - as long as I can creatively express myself, I'm happy. I'm currently working on incorporating more repurposed items into my work. ☮

  • Gordon

Gordon is a 7 year old 3rd grader who loves trying new things. He had the idea of selling his creations, while working on a project one day. He gives 10% of his gross earnings to charity. See his creations in our shop section, "Handmade by Kids".

  • Molly

    Creator, Assistant

Molly is an amazing 3 year old. Her hobby, when not annoying Gordon, is to "do projeks" of any kind - painting is her favorite! She's the epitome of "girly-girl" - Pink & purple are her favorite colors and she considers glitter to be an accessory.

  • Thomas Rollercoaster Crenshaw

    Toy Tester, Kitty Toy Muse

Thomas (named by Gordon when he was 4 years old) is named after that famous blue train. He was the inspiration behind my line of "Tough Kitty" Cat Toys. He talks a LOT, loves to sleep in the sun, and is the best fly-catcher we've ever had.

Frequently asked questions

How do I Request a Custom Order?

Simply click on "Contact Seller" or "Request Custom Order" on any page in my shop. Describe what you would like and ask any questions. I will reply with answers within 24 hours.

Custom Order Basics

1) I DO NOT require a down payment for custom orders, except in special cases. Contact me for more information.
2) Your item will be given its own Listing, complete with photos and full description, upon completion.
3) You will be sent the link to you custom listing via Etsy Conversation.
4) You will have 7 days to choose to purchase your listing.
5) Communication is key to creating a custom order successfully! Please, speak up if you do not like how the item looks or if I have misinterpreted what you requested.
6) If you change your mind and decide not to purchase your requested item, that is fine. NO pressure!

Care instructions

You may see care instructions for each item in its listing.
Each item will be shipped with a printed set of care instructions. Please leave a message in the "Note to Seller" section at checkout if you need more than one copy of these instructions.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every item is wrapped in tissue paper or in its own box before packed in its shipping box.
Should you want your gift specially wrapped or a card included, please send me a message. In most cases, I can fulfill your request at no extra charge.

Pre-Washed Items

Some items in my shop have been pre-washed, particularly blankets and clothing. Please read item descriptions to learn whether an item has been washed.
I wash according to the care instructions that will be included with the item and only use a scent-free, all-natural laundry soap.
Please contact me for a list of ingredients in the soap.

We Have a Cat

It is important that I let you know that I live in a home with a cat. Though my supplies and completed items are stored in an area off-limits to Sir Thomas Rollercoaster Crenshaw, he does have access to all other parts of my home.
All wearable items and blankets that I create are washed with an all-natural laundry soap, dried, sealed in zip-lock bags and stored in a cat-free area of our home until sold.
Although I take great care to keep my items from coming in contact with my pet, THOSE WHO ARE SEVERELY ALLERGIC to cat fur and/or dander may want to look for a seller who does not have a pet.

Where did that Made-to-Order Listing Go?!

During the holiday gift-buying "season", I must deactivate my made-to-order and custom order listings. I get so busy filling orders for these items that my family and I miss out of many of our holiday traditions.
But, WAIT A MINUTE! I am accepting requests throughout the season. Simply send me a message, telling me what you'd like and when you need it, and I will be in touch. I am currently creating a holiday work schedule and will pencil your request in. Please let me know ASAP if you think you'd like to request a custom order.
And, as usual, I DO NOT REQUIRE PRE-PAYMENT for these requests until the items are finished (read more in the FAQ "Custom Order Basics".
