The Beginning of Redwood Burl.

George Buck is a living legend in the redwood burl country of Northern California; he is famous for living & playing large for nearly 50 years. Buck’s redwood burl business developed from his garden and landscaping company in the Carmel Valley area back in the 70’s. While working on a project in Pebble Beach, his clients needed some landscaping stones & driftwood so George drove north searching for the right pieces. On this particular trip to Northern California, he saw some redwood slabs being cut & instantly loved this idea. George then bought a chainsaw & learned real fast it needed to be sharpened. Proof he was a newbie to the game (but not for long). That didn’t stop him; he cut several burl slabs and took them back to Carmel Valley. The response he got was tremendous and was soon being asked for more. With that, George opened several stores within a few years all over the California coast. He had stores from Laguna Beach to Santa Barbara, Big Sur to Carmel, Cannery Row to Sausalito, San Francisco to Eureka and several more along the coast. His fine woodwork can be found in galleries all over the US & he has been a supplier of fine reclaimed redwood to artisans & craftsmen around the world.

George’s expertise in this field has led to the success of many new artists and redwood burl business owners in the industry. He has been an inspiration to them & for some to the extent of changing their lives for the better. At one point in his career, he sponsored a several people from Vietnam and taught them everything he knew. They went on to become some of the leading carvers in the world & owned businesses as well. They have now passed this skill onto their kin, forever changing the course of their family’s legacy.

George Buck is truly a legend in the redwood burl industry, an artist who knows the process from decades of hands on involvement at every level of the business. His love & enthusiasm for the craft can still be found in each and every George Buck original today.

His will go down in history for being one of the originators of this industry.
