AMERICAN KARAKUL, a rare and ancient breed of sheep, originate in Central Asia near the village of Kara Kul (or Black Lake) where they've historically been used for fur, meat, wool, oil and milk. Their naturally colored, lustrous fleeces are renown as the persian lambskin used to make a variety of warm, soft, and elegant garments. Most sheep are born black and fade to gray with age, but white, red, tan, gold, and brown also occur. Karakul sheep are very hardy, adapting well to stressful conditions, and the ewes are very attentive and skillful mothers.
The Livestock Conservancy has recognized the American Karakul as a threatened breed and so Retreat Farm takes great care in the breeding and preservation of our flock and its genetics. Our lamb is used for meat, lambskins, and felting and weaving wools.
Your purchase helps to preserve and perpetuate this very unique breed.
