About

Make your own luck

My shop was started out of impatience. I graduated in 2015 from Leeds College of Art and unlike my other classmates, I felt as I had for a long time that I would never really 'make it' as a professional, working, eating artist. I'd only recently starting creating artwork I felt defined me and my style, and I was enjoying it, but regardless of my attempts to start as a freelancer I felt as if I were waiting for an opportunity that would never come.

In my spare time I'd set up shop via Society6 and later, Redbubble.com, supplying my artwork online that could be made to order as prints and products. I often created artwork in the first place as presents for family and friends which was always received so thankfully.

I found my artwork seemed to work really well in this application, and my friends and family became so interested they even started buying them of their own accord. These were people who had never even heard of the term 'fashion illustration', as I hadn't, a few years previous, and had little concept of illustration as anything other than for children's books. Coming from a town and background with little cultural investment or creative interest, it was so interesting to see how people reacted to illustration replacing commercial design to decorate their homes with.

I began to become extremely frustrated with the art and design available on the mainstream market, which seemed, for lack of a better word, bland. I wanted decoration that was absorbing, beautiful, crafted, a little magic to your everyday. Somebody once asked me why I had a lunch box featuring trees with little smiley faces on. I replied, that it was the one thing in my life that didn't have to be serious. Design, can be playful, entrancing, otherworldly if you want it to. And I did.

It eventually hit me that I had started up my own business without even realising, and began to start actively seeking advice, skills, knowledge in order to make it my future. I knew as I had with little else that it was exactly what I wanted to be doing in life. After that, the pieces started to fall into place, and I set my heart on making it my day job, relentlessly promoting, researching and producing art. Now I'm doing something I dreamed of: running my own business with my name on the label. My work developed into 'Rebecca Feneley Illustration', my own line of illustrated products including homewares, clothing and accessories. My etsy shop has provided me with an outlet to expand my artwork it's own right, simply for the love of fashion and illustrating. It's a little more personal, and gives me a little more freedom with my art.

I'm still exploring and expanding, and it's all damn hard work, but I've never been more happy to call myself a starving artist. At the end of the day, you can make your own luck, if you try hard enough.
