About

Rhinestone Studio Celebrates 10 Years of (Some) (Crazy) Rhinestone Apparel

My Rhinestone Studio website went live in October 2004 and on the first day, I only got one order online (my brother). My mom said, " Oh Cathy, maybe you should quit, maybe it's not a good idea to have this business." I had to laugh. I did not stop...

Back in 2002, I was searching for a "Big Sister" rhinestone shirt for my daughter to wear to the hospital when her sister was to be born. I looked in shops, found some strange (cheesy) screen-printed (badly) shirts, and found some embroidered (flowery) shirts that said "Big Sister." Nothing was hip or 'rocker' looking --nothing I wanted to buy. So, I started searching for iron-on transfers (decals) or maybe some rhinestone designs I could order myself.

I found a few companies online, mostly selling rhinestone letters in fonts you don't want (Helvetica) or in rhinestone sizes that were too big (gaudy). But I noticed that the rhinestones were hot fix and flat, and they came on a tape, and you could "move" them if you wanted to change the design or font.

Voila! I bought some purple rhinestones in a font I did not want (hated) and I was off to find my tweezers (yes, for eyebrows) and "move" the rhinestones to match a font I had printed for "BIG SISTER" on my printer (setting them backwards, on the light board, of course, so they iron on straight). Well that took two hours! Clearly that was not the way to have this business...

After a few weeks of making samples of different designs, creating computer designs and setting up suppliers in NY, finding a machine and calling a few people (okay, a lot), I hired a company to build my website and got a photographer to take the initial shots. Before the site was live, my neighbor told me to make cherry motif designs for The Cherry Stop in Traverse City, Michigan, for their festival. So I mailed three shirt samples and got an order for 105 shirts that had to be done in five days. I could barely make three shirts in a week, now I had a real order. I got the order done with a friend's heat press, and I still have that framed check from The Cherry Stop. Even the mayor wore our shirt during the parade (She).

About three months later, I promoted a "hurricane survivor" rhinestone shirt in Florida, when all the hurricanes hit. We raised money for causes there and got some news coverage. Even Governor Jeb Bush's wife liked our shirts! Since then, we have done custom logo shirts and hats (and undies) for all kinds of interesting people and groups, including Willie Nelson concerts, Miss America pageant contestants (jackets and, ummm, some panties, too), Ringling Brothers Circus, some NBA players' wives and girlfriends, a designer named "Awful" (not kidding) from Las Vegas, and hundreds of schools, dance studios and companies like Zoya (nail polish), laser hair removal and skin care centers(Lazadern -hi in Idaho!). I have met some great people through this business and have had a lot of laughs and interesting phone calls.

Quite a few of my customers have been with me for all ten years and I am really proud of that! I take care of people extremely well and I don't miss deadlines. I want them to trust me and they do -- even though most of them have never seen me in person!

When I started the business in 2004, the Internet was just taking off for e-commerce and working from home became cool. Both things made my business possible. Because of progress in the world, working at home is real business.

This year we are getting more involved with Etsy, creating a new product line for tennis, birthdays and other themes, and I am looking forward to what types of projects will come to Rhinestone Studio this year!
