About

My 1-Woman Factory

When I as about 8, Mr. Rogers visited a potter and I was enthralled by that spinning mud. Then there was a kick-wheel potter at the Renaissance fair and when I was 15, my parents adopted my aunt's pottery supplies, including a kick-wheel & kiln. While pursuing my Physics, Applied Math and Creative Writing degrees at UCSD, I continued to experiment with clay. I became a programmer, an engineering-through-legos instructor, a math teacher, a peace corps volunteer (beekeeping)...all the while playing with clay in the background.

My pottery business has grown from a shed, to the living room, to a home studio steps from my bedroom. Working at home, on my own schedule, allows me the freedom to attend to bees on their vigorous schedule, namely to capture swarms at 2 in the afternoon or explore problematic location where they have set up shop. Working with clay and bees instill in me not only a seasonal awareness, but a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things.

In a world of drones and global factories, most of the products that appear on our shelves are essentially made by robots or by humans treated like robots. The beauty of a handmade pot is the unquantifiable element of intention, the quality of human shaping and consciousness. I make my pots to be held, loved, used, and incorporated into daily life. With luck, they won’t be tossed out with the rest of the consumer goods (90% of which end up in landfills six months after purchase), but will become part of a family heritage. And maybe that remnant of human touch will resonate throughout the user’s day, reminding them how we are all part of the same human family, trying to create an existence where as many people as we can possibly help live healthy, happy, just and profitable lives. By purchasing my pottery, you enable me to pursue my dreams and an extremely peaceful lifestyle including beekeeping. In exchange, I hope that my pottery brings a sense of connectedness, calm and beauty.

I throw functional pots then decorate then with a wide variety of natural imagery. All are unique- no stencils, decals or other shortcuts. I throw and paint each one individually (so the pot that arrives in your hands will always be slightly different from the one in the photo). I use a wonderful, durable, clay that will survive microwave, oven and dishwasher abuse.
